6224 + 10G Base-T, can't get links to come up

I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing here. I've been banging my head on this one and would be glad to learn it's something simple... my problem is, when I connect from the 6224 using either of the ports on the 10G Base-T module, I can't get the link to come up (no link LED's on the module, or the NIC).

Details:

  • Switch:
    • PowerConnect 6224
      • Bay 1: CX4 module (nothing connected in it at the moment)
      • Bay 2: 10G Base-T module (the only bay you can put one in)
  • NIC
    • Dell/Broadcom NexExtreme II 57810S Dual Port
  • Cable
    • 6E/550 MHz factory made patch cable, 10ft long (have tried others)

So, I am trying to do the most basic test possible. Just power up the machine and hold after the BIOS post (no OS, no drivers).

  • If I connect the cable direct from the module to the NIC, no link lights.
  • If I connect the (same) cable from port 1 to port 2 of the module (straight cable, auto-MDIX kicks in), I get link lights.
    • This says to me that my cable should be ok, and the module ports should be ok.
  • If I connect the (same) cable from port 1 to port 2 of the NIC (again, straight cable, auto-MDIX kicks in), I get link lights.
    • This says to me that my cable should be ok, and the NIC ports should be ok)
  • If I connect either of the ports on the NIC to one of the gigabit ports on the front of the switch, I get a link light.
    • This says to me that I'm not insane, and something works.

What am I missing here? Anyone got any further tests to suggest?

Thanks!
-Jim
