XG stacking port for VLANs

I have 3 Powerconnect 6200's currently stacked.  I'm having some lost packets and I think it might be related to the stacking configuration.  Currently the XG ports have no port config on them at all.  I assume that means they are in access mode for the Default VLAN 1.  I've been reading through the guides and posts and it seems that the current config isn't correct and probably only the default VLAN of 1 is actually traveling through there correctly and that everything else is getting routed to and from the firewall.  At least thats my working theory.  I'm a little confused on the "proper" setup for the XG ports though....

To get that setup correctly I think I need to combine the XG ports into a LAG, change the XG port config to general mode and allow the appropriate VLANS with a PVID for VLAN1?  Does that sound correct?  Also, is there any outages or "blips" when I do that, I unfortunately live 1.5 hours from the core stack.
