Try getting work PowerConnect 8132 + PowerConnect 8024-k (Blade Switch) + PowerVault MD3600 on MTU 9000

Everywhere  I set MTU 9000 (Jumbo Frames)

My Host systems is 2x M520 with Broadcom mezz card 10G (2 ports)

On 10G card I am try getting work iSCSI link with storage, but work only on MTU 1500

On M520 installed Linux CentOS 6.4 (where I set up MTU 9000)

Upgrading a 6248 stack - all members down?

I have a stack of two 6248 switches.  If I upgrade the firmware, does the stack reboot one member at a time (so I don't lose connectivity), or does the whole stack reboot at once?  About how long is a switch down during an upgrade?

How to map out a switch network manually

Hi,

I have a remote data centre that I'm trying to map out, without visiting the site and tracing cables. Given that I can access the address table on each switch, what's the easiest way to find out if switch A is connected to switch B? the switches in my DC are stacked, which complicates matters slightly.

For example when I look at my MAC address table, almost all of my switches have a single MAC per port, apart the channel port (I believe this is a link aggregate port) which shows MAC addresses belonging to Dell, Cisco and other devices. How do I know where the channel port plugs into directly? Whether it goes to a Dell switch or say a Cisco switch?

Thanks

Is it possible to use Virtual Link Trunking in a mixed Dell and Cisco environment?

Hi,

My service provider is Cisco and they provide the firewall and routers as a managed service. My internal network uses Dell Power Connect switches. In the past we had an issue where the ISP's spanning tree costs leaked onto my network and caused some network outages - I'm thinking of trying to use Dell virtual trunking protocol instead of spanning tree, but am not sure if this would be feasible in a mixed Cisco and Dell environment.

Please advise.

Thanks

PowerConnect 5548, 5448, 5324

I have a stack of powerconnect 5xxx series switches.  Each switch has its address in the 192.168.5.x range.  This is on VLAN5.   All switches have two dedicated trunk ports in a LAG group that connect to a TOR switch. (5548)

I'm able from a pc at 192.168.1.x , vlan1, to access other servers, printers, etc, on vlan5 within the 192.168.5.x range, but I'm unable to access any of the power connect switches.

Any thoughts?

Call Recording not seeing UDP

Good Day Gentlemen and Ladies

I have two DELL 3548P's that are not stacked but connected over g3 and g4, I have a single port (porte45) that is connected to a server that is using CallRex software to record phone calls off certain numbers.

I have port e45 set to monitor ports  below and I have NO spanning-tree on port e45

e47, e48, g3, g4. .

Ports e47 and e48 are a port-channel, to an up link distribution layer switch (gateway)

The only difference is recently we upgraded our network to a redundant one  EXCEPT  these switch, it used to be a single up link from an access port on e26.to a stacked pair, Since we put in a pair of switches I created a port-channel and am now forwarding traffic across a trunk to a pair of switches using VRRP. I configured e45 exactly how the old monitoring port was configured.

I need to get this working again But I am not to familiar with it and these are just network switches passing Traffic through a VOIP Server and also a Call recording server monitoring 5 extensions, everything works except the call recording, the NIC configured on the Server for QOS sees nothing

Can anyone give me a shove in the right direction

PowerConnect 8024k - Copy startup-config

I have two PC8024ks that I need to run this code on:

copy tftp://ip/filename startup-config

My TFTP is started, I hit yes to continue and it thinks for a second and then throws back errors:

Error in configuration script at line number xx

This is saying that something is wrong with the config Im trying to upload, but I just pulled the config from an identical configured switch in the same chassis using:

copy startup-config tftp://ip/filename

Any insight as to why its erroring out?

Faulty gigabit interface on powerconnect 6248

Hi

I have a port which is not active anymore for some reason. the complete cable run tests just fine as well as the pc so it is definately the port. when i run the cli diagnostics it refuses to give me the cable length instead it says "not copper". when i look at the interface in detail i notice that it's state says disabled instead of forwarding like the other active ports. it is enabled though and also on auto neg.

Is the port physically faulty or is there another way to get it going?

5548P configuration question

Hello,

We have 4 Dell PowerConnect 5548P switches which are stacked. These two switches are going to be connected to desktops/notebooks and printers on one VLAN, and then some IP phones on a Voice VLAN. These switches are going to be connected to two 6248s which will act as core switches. Our physical servers will connect to the Core switch which will be another VLAN.

I think I have the VLAN config worked out, however, is there a best practice document or site for configuring these switches? Such as enabling Jumbo Frames, Flow Control, Tree Spanning, RIP, OSPF, etc?

Thanks.

6224 + 10G Base-T, can't get links to come up

$

I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing here. I've been banging my head on this one and would be glad to learn it's something simple... my problem is, when I connect from the 6224 using either of the ports on the 10G Base-T module, I can't get the link to come up (no link LED's on the module, or the NIC).

Details:

  • Switch:
    • PowerConnect 6224
      • Bay 1: CX4 module (nothing connected in it at the moment)
      • Bay 2: 10G Base-T module (the only bay you can put one in)
  • NIC
    • Dell/Broadcom NexExtreme II 57810S Dual Port
  • Cable
    • 6E/550 MHz factory made patch cable, 10ft long (have tried others)

So, I am trying to do the most basic test possible. Just power up the machine and hold after the BIOS post (no OS, no drivers).

  • If I connect the cable direct from the module to the NIC, no link lights.
  • If I connect the (same) cable from port 1 to port 2 of the module (straight cable, auto-MDIX kicks in), I get link lights.
    • This says to me that my cable should be ok, and the module ports should be ok.
  • If I connect the (same) cable from port 1 to port 2 of the NIC (again, straight cable, auto-MDIX kicks in), I get link lights.
    • This says to me that my cable should be ok, and the NIC ports should be ok)
  • If I connect either of the ports on the NIC to one of the gigabit ports on the front of the switch, I get a link light.
    • This says to me that I'm not insane, and something works.

What am I missing here? Anyone got any further tests to suggest?

Thanks!
-Jim

7048 Stack Weirdness

$

We are using two 7048 switches stacked with each 2 CX4 Expansion card with firmware 5.1.1.7.

Everything seems to be working allright, but.. and now its getting wierd... the Slot summary doesnt show one card on one of the switches:

              Admin   Power          Configured Card
Slot  Status  State   State             Model ID              Pluggable
----- ------ ------- ------- -------------------------------- ---------
1/0   Full   Enable  Enable  PowerConnect 7048                   No
1/1   Empty  Enable  Enable                                      Yes
1/2   Full   Enable  Enable  CX4 Card                            Yes
2/0   Full   Enable  Enable  PowerConnect 7048                   No
2/1   Full   Enable  Enable  CX4 Card                            Yes
2/2   Full   Enable  Enable  CX4 Card                            Yes

Also the show switch stack-ports is missing the installed link, we are missing the Te1/1/1 and the Te1/1/2:

console#show switch stack-ports

                 Configured  Running
                   Stack      Stack      Link       Link
Interface       Mode       Mode       Status     Speed (Gb/s)
---------------- ---------- ---------- ------------ ------------
Te1/2/1          Stack      Stack      Link Up      16
Te1/2/2          Stack      Stack      Link Up      16
Te2/1/1          Stack      Stack      Link Up      16
Te2/1/2          Stack      Stack      Link Up      16
Te2/2/1          Stack      Stack      Link Up      16
Te2/2/2          Stack      Stack      Link Up      16

now for thewierdness, a show switch stack-ports diag shows the following:

console#show switch stack-ports diag

It does show statistics on the not recognised installed module..... in the webpage it is shown as :

So, what to do now?. is it safe to re-insert the CX4 card and if so, is it hot plugable?. And how is it possible that there is going traffic through that card while it doesnt recognizes it...

How should I configure Spanning Tree

$

Hi,

I have several core Dell switches using PowerConnect 6224s mostly - these ink into my provider's Cisco kit. We run several VLANs and have redundant links between stacked switches.

I've read up on spanning tree and have the following tasks:

1. Map out the network - including ID root bridge, root ports, blocked paths, max age and helo time

Once I've done my analysis information, I'm not sure how to best optimize the spanning tree config, so far I have:

1. Ensure RSTP is enabled on all switches
2. Ensure all edge ports have spanning tree port fast configured
3. Do not declare spanning tree port fast on links between switches
4. Force speed and duplex settings on all link ports between switches (I assume this is because auto negotiate takes longer?)

What I'm not sure about is:
1. Should I enable BPDU guard and if so, where?
2. Should I enable root guard and if so, where?

I've read Todd's informative article: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-switches/f/866/t/19465205.aspx

But, I'm not sure where\whether I should be configuring the guard options - am happy to provide additional info as needed.

Thanks

Procedure to installing RPS-600/700 for PowerConnect 5224/5424

Hi All,

I bought one unit of RPS-600 and RPS-700 for power redundancy for one unit of PowerConnect 5224 and 5424 respectively.

Two questions/doubts came to my mind and I hope some experts here could clarify:
1. What is the step-by-step procedure of connecting rps-600/700 (new) to PowerConnect 5524/5424 (live system) - e.g. power up rps-600 first, then rps cable on rps-600 then rps cable on 5524 etc?
2. With the step defined above, is there any downtime?

Thanks!

Cheers,
Elvin

Configuring a LAG between stacked 6000 and stacked 5000 switches

$

Hi,

I have:

2 x 6000 PowerConnect (PC) switches - stacked, let’s call these 6PC_Unit1 &
6PC_Unit2

2 x 5000 PC switches - stacked, let’s call these 5PC_Unit1 & 5PC_Unit2

These switches have multiple VLANS

I want to create a LAG between these switches. Please advise if I've got
anything wrong, but my plan is to do the procedure below.

On
6PC_Unit1 run:

  1. Sw(config#) Interface te1/0/1, te1/0/2, te1/0/1, te1/1/2 (select
    ports1 & 2 on both stack members)

  2. Sw(config-if#) channel-group 1 mode active (enable ports with LACP,
    dynamic)

  3. Show interfaces port-channel 1 (confirm interfaces are in the port
    channel)

  4. Interface port-channel 1

  5. Switchport mode trunk
  6. Switchport trunk allowed vlan add 1,10,20,30 tagged

  7. switchport trunk allowed vlan add 10,30 tagged

Do the above procedure on 5PC_Unit1
(i.e. configure both stack members)

Connect the following cables up:

5PC_Unit1 port 1  to 6PC_Unit1 port 1

5PC_Unit1 port 2 to 6PC_Unit2 port 1

5PC_Unit2 port 1  to 6PC_Unit1 port 2

5PC_Unit2 port 2 to 6PC_Unit2 port  2

Effectively creating 4 links between 4
switches and 2 separate stacks. Would this be the correct procedure to follow?

Also, I’ve noticed a number of guides mention
setting the spanning tree mode of the port channel to portfast – however I’ve
also read this shouldn’t be used on inter switch links and SPT sees aggregate
links as a single link.

Please advise if this procedure is correct.

Thanks

Force 10 MXL question

$

Hey guys,

I have a quick question, but first let me give you my setup.

We are currently implementing a new m1000e chassis with 2 Force10MXL switches. Both of the switches are in the b fabrics. I have F10a(left B fabric) going to our N7k with port-channel 7, while F10b (right B fabric) going to our N7k with a port-channel of 8. There is no stacking between the two F10's, but are up and running active/active (with no live servers on them yet)

I am kind of confused because we have 4 servers in there (not live yet) and they are showing:

F10-A#show ip int brie

Interface                IP-Address      OK  Method Status                Protocol

TenGigabitEthernet 0/1   unassigned      YES None   up                    up

TenGigabitEthernet 0/2   unassigned      YES None   up                    up

TenGigabitEthernet 0/3   unassigned      YES None   up                    up

TenGigabitEthernet 0/4   unassigned      YES None   up                    up

Sw2:
F10-B#show ip int brie

Interface                IP-Address      OK  Method Status                Protocol

TenGigabitEthernet 0/1   unassigned      YES None   up                    up

TenGigabitEthernet 0/2   unassigned      YES None   up                    up

TenGigabitEthernet 0/3   unassigned      YES None   up                    up

TenGigabitEthernet 0/4   unassigned      YES None   up                    up

My question is I know both switches see the ports. How does the server know which port to go out? Is this configured within the server, or in the F10? Do I have to stack the 2 F10's with a stacking cable?

Connection between 2 vlans in 2 PowerConnect 6224

Hello,

In the place where I work we've bought a couple of PowerConnect 6224 switches and we've set them up with a very basic configuration:

3vlans per switch (with id's 1,2,3)

The first vlan is not been used (although it used to be the admin vlan), in the second vlan is the lan (and admin access) ports 1-12,24 , and in the third one are the wan ports 13-23. The lan segment have the following ips: 10.10.50/255 in both switches.

The first switch has the ip: 10.10.50.1

The second switch has the ip: 10.10.50.2

Both switches are connected thought the port 24 (which is part of the vlan2 on both of them), however I cannot ping one switch from the other, so for some reason the wire between them do nothing.

This is the output of #show run in the 1st switch:

PowerConnect M6348 issues

Morning all,

Powerconnect M6348 was working aok in one chassis, moved to another, the green light comes on at the back and never goes to blue/green.

Trying to get to the web Gui fails, even trying racadm from the m1000e and then going to the blade console doesnt come up.  Unit is within guarantee, just wanted to exhaust all options before getting a replacement.  I do not have the USB/Serial cable to hand (office move lost that) but to fix it, dont mind going down to maplin and buying USB/Serial cable.

Any thoughts?  Should we try forcing a firmware upgrade to it, the problem is I do not know what release it is on in the first place :(

Network mapping software

hi

I have a number of Dell PowerConnect switches (mostly 6248), along some Cisco devices spread out over two data

centres. I'm looking to create some network diagrams of two data centres and am hoping someone can recommend

a good piece of network mapping software that I can use to map out switches, routers and links.Im wondering if there is a HP Openview or 3com network director equivalent for Dell that

I can use with read only SNMP strings.  Please advise....

thanks

Upgrading a 6248 stack - all members down?

I have a stack of two 6248 switches.  If I upgrade the firmware, does the stack reboot one member at a time (so I don't lose connectivity), or does the whole stack reboot at once?  About how long is a switch down during an upgrade?
