FTOS Force10 S50 Out-Of-Box to Telnetting or SSH

We are in real need of some instructions to setting up our new force 10 switches we have 10 new switches to replace our outdated Catalyst 2900 switches,

I've read through the manual searched far and wide over the internet and i'm really struggling to set up our new switch I'm a novice no doubt but I should be able to get it with a little guidance, I think my big downfall is i'm just missing something in the instructions that i've read through it informs me to set up using

config -> interface managementethernet

this does not work and when I use interface->? It does not list a managementethernet I think this is my big downfall.

What I would really like is if I could have someone give me step by step idea of how to get from opening the box and initially plugging in the switch to being able to work on it remotely and not needing to use the serial port. (the more simple directions and providing explanations so I can try to learn would be AMAZING!)

Thanks in advance I really appreciate any advice!

I am having Dell 6248 switch. I have created some users with privilege level 3. Now i want to give permission of  "show run" command to those users.

Can anybody help me how can we give access of "show run" command to these users?

MXL Long timeout on LACP

Hello Everyone

I would like to enable the long timeout option on the LACP channel on our MXL unit.

Can anyone confirm that if i enable this option i will provoke an outage on the interface?

Thank you

[resolved] Cannot logout from M6220 console when logged from CMC

$

Hello,

I'm managing a PowerEdge M1000e blade enclosure with two integrated PowerConnect M6220 ethernet switches.

If I logon the CMC (physically with the KVM or with SSH) and if, from there, I logon to a switch with the "connect switch-x" command, I can configure the switch but I cannot logout when I'm done.

Of course I tried the "exit" and "logout" command but nothing happens, I stay logged on the switch, the workaround is to wait the session timeout.

This is quite inconvenient because I have to leave the console opened with root privileges and I cannot logon on the other switch because the console is "in use".

This doesn't happen when I use a direct telnet connection to the switch, it's only when I'm logged on the CMC.

Any advices?

Cheers,

Nicolas

Show run output optimalisation PowerConnect 3548

$

When I do a show run the output is not displayed as desired. Most of the settings are displayed per interface instead of the interface range command. For example:

interface ethernet e1
switchport general pvid *
exit
interface ethernet e2
switchport general pvid *
exit
interface ethernet e3
switchport general pvid *
exit
interface ethernet e5
switchport general pvid *
exit
interface ethernet e6
switchport general pvid *

etc. This also happens with the these command:

  • voice vlan enable
  • lldp notifications enable
  • lldp optional-tlv port-desc sys-name sys-desc sys-cap 802.3-mac-phy
  • lldp med enable network-policy location poe-pse inventory

However some settings are doing much better:

interface range ethernet e(1-24)
lldp med network-policy add 1

interface range ethernet e(1-24)
spanning-tree bpduguard

interface range ethernet e(1-24)
spanning-tree portfast

Alle the settings are configured with the interface range command, but some settings will show up for each interface which is sometimes a bit annoying when you having a hard time troubleshooting a problem…

This occurs on a multiple 3524P/48P switches with almost the latest firmware: 2.0.0.52 (it will happen on earlier firmware releases as well)

Do other users of these switches have the same issue? I was hoping Dell would fix this in a firmware update but since the life cycle of development time of these switches is over I don't think they will :)

I am starting this thread to make sure that this is expected behavior (for these switches), maybe I’ll contact Dell support later when this case is stronger…

LAG Configuration-multiple switch

-5 - 6224 Switches with NO ROUTING enabled

-1 of the 5 switches is acting as a LAG switch in that I've got (2) port LAGS coming from the other 4 switches into the single 6224.

-The single switch containing all of the other switch LAG's is configured with (LAG CHANNELS 1-4 respectively).

-All non-LAG ports are configured as untagged members of VLAN 10 and the LAG CHannels are configured in GENERAL VLAN ADD 10 TAGGED throughout.

When attempting to bring multiple switch ports configured in a LAG into a single switch,  do I need to keep the port-channel numbers seperate or should I be able to create a single port-channel for all of VLAN 10 between all switches?  I'm getting some intermittent results when setting up the lab of switches and i'm not yet comfortable with where the config is going.

hi,

we are trying to connect 2x esxi hosts (with vDs and LACP) to 2x DELL N3048 switches using MLAG,

we have the same port-channels on both switches with identical configuration. If we use the show interface port-channel command, all the links are active on the port-channels but when we use the command vpc XX inside on the port-channels, the links on one switches become inactive

any advice is welcomed... :)

thanks for your support,

I am trying to configure a port on a 3548p to be untagged on vlan 20.  I have a voip gateway that is not vlan aware and i am using vlan 20 for my voice services.  i currently have the vlan defined and the port set to general mode with a pvid of 20.  but the device is not accessing vlan 20.  if i change the pvid to 1 with vlan 20 port membership set to tagged and then put a vlan aware device and test, it works as expected and i have access to the vlan.  but remove the tagging and set the pvid to 20 and it doesnt work.  If i try to alter the vlan membership to port assigned to vlan 20 untagged, i get an error 'cannot assign port e44 to unauthenticated vlan 20.   Can someone please tell me what i am doing wrong?  if

Stretching VLAN during migration

Hello, I hope you guys can help :) I'm busy migrating to a new Dell Server and Networking infrastructure from an old HP Server and Network infrastructure. As a first step in the migration I want to virtualise all the existing HP Servers and host those VM's on the new Dell Infrastructure. This is to buy time as the HP kit is out of capacity and warrantee etc. Dell Force10 s4810 - Datacenter switch where my Dell Servers are plugged into Dell PowerConnect 7024p - Access switch that is used for OOB Management AND connecting to the old HP Network HP 4800G - Old Core network switch where the HP Servers are plugged in to. Current Config: The old HP and new Dell networks are routed and talk to each other through the 7024p. This has been configured and works well. Challenges: The HP Servers are on a 192.168.62.0/24 subnet (Default VLAN 1) The Dell Servers are on a 10.62.20.0/24 subnet (Vlan 20) The New Infrastructure VM's are on 10.62.30.0/24 (Vlan 30) Default VLAN on the Dell Kit is 4000 and VLAN 1 is in shutdown I want to stretch the 192.168.62.0/24 network onto the Dell Infrastructure and onto a virtual switch in Hyper-V so I can virtualise the HP Servers without any reconfiguration. The OS's are 2003 old and not worth the time investment to reconfigure as I'm building a new infrastructure on the Dell Virtualisation platform and every service will be properly migrated to the new environment. I'd appreciate any guidance on how to get the 192.168.62.0/24 HP Default VLAN 1 stretched onto the Dell Environment.

Powerconnect 2848 LAG Recommendations

$

I recently purchased a Dell PowerConnect 2816 for my home lab and have been trying to read up on how best to configure the switch to support my iSCSI needs.

For my Hyper-V server I am adding four additional NICs via an Intel Quad Port Ethernet Server Adapter (I350T4), then connecting those ports via four CAT-5e cables into ports g9-g12.  For my NAS I have a Synology DS1513+ which comes with four LAN ports with LAG Support connected to my PowerConnect 2816 via four CAT-5e cables into ports g13-g16.  My hope is that I can configure the PowerConnect 2816 to support LAG to allow for increased network speed between the Hyper-V server and the Synology NAS.

From what I have read here the only steps I need to configure on the PowerConnect 2816 is to go into Switch | Link Aggregation | LAG Membership, configure g9-g12 with a 1, and then configure g13-g16 with a 2.  I suppose I could create a dedicated VLAN for the Hyper-V server to NAS communication that includes only ports g9-g16 but I don't know how to do custom VLANs and I am not sure it's worth the effort.

Am I missing anything else on the PowerConnect 2816 configuration?

I am assuming that I will see an improved performance of bandwidth traffic between the Hyper-V server and NAS - is that correct?

Much appreciated.

Spanning Tree

$

We have what looks to be a spanning tree problem that's disabling links between our switches. We're not sure why and are hoping someone may have the answer.

Basic network architecture;

  • There is a pair of 8132F switches configured as a stack for our core
  • Edge switches are 7048P, and all have single physical or logical (LACP) links back to the core
  • All links from core to edge are configured as trunks
  • None of the edge switches have links between each other, so there should be no possibility of a loop

In terms of spanning tree configuration;

  • All switches have 802.1w RSTP enabled
  • The 8132F stack is configured with a root bridge priority of 4096
  • A 7048P closest to the core is configured with a root bridge priority of 8192
  • All other edge switches are set with the default priority of 32768
  • Edge ports on all switches are manually set to portfast
  • Trunk links between the core and edge switches do not have portfast enabled

All firmware is current - v6.1.0.6 on the 8132 stack, and v5.1.5.1 on the 7048Ps

Below is an excerpt from the logs on the core switch. For reference, these are the ports on the core switch connecting to several of our edge switches.

  • Te1/0/22 is a single 1GbE copper link to an edge 7048 - switch 1
  • Te1/0/1 and Te2/0/1 are aggregated 10GbE fiber links, forming LACP port-channel 2 to a second edge 7048 - switch 2
  • Te1/0/5 and Te2/0/5 are aggregated 10GbE fiber links, forming LACP port channel 4 to a third edge 7048 - switch 3

So to summarize, when the link comes up on switch 1 after rebooting, the link for switch 2 is disabled. After rebooting switch 2 and its link is restored, this knocks out the link to switch 3. I suspect the links are being disabled on the edge switches rather than the core, but as the logs are lost on a reboot I can't be sure. Can logging be configured to survive reboots? For the time being we have disabled spanning tree to ensure these links stay up, but would like to resolve the problem so it can be enabled once again.

Can anyone please offer suggestions as to why these links are failing after a topology change, especially given there are no redundant paths? What steps might we need to go about to resolve it?

Thanks

Dell 10GE SFP+ Dual Port Module 6200-XGSF (DPN OU691D) Red

I have a Dell 6248 PowerConnect Switch with 2 x Dell 10GE SFP+ Dual Port Module 6200-XGSF (DPN OU691D) cards.  One of the cards displays 2 Red LED lights as soon as a boot the switch.  I have tried swapping the cards to the other port but the Red LEDs follow the card.

When I run

console#show fiber-ports optical-transceiver

                                   Output    Input

Port     Temp  Voltage  Current     Power    Power   TX     LOS

Coffee  [Volt]     [mA]     [dBm]    [dBm]   Fault

-------  ----  -------  -------   -------  -------   -----  ---

1/xg1     0.0    6.553    131.0     8.165    8.165   No     Yes

1/xg2     0.0    6.553    131.0     8.165    8.165   No     Yes

I don't see the 2nd card which would be g3, g4.

What options do I have to troubleshoot this card?

Powerconnect 7048P Stack 'System Power Status - Error'

I currently have a stack of 4 7048Ps in production working perfectly. Although when entering in 'show system' or 'show system power' in the CLI the Power supplies section currently only gives me the information of the master switch and the other 3 are Status: Error with no information.

1 System Error 0.0 0.0
2 System Error 0.0 0.0
3 System Error 0.0 0.0
4 System OK    4.2 72.4

Entering show switch stack-ports shows all stacking cables working at 16Gb/s.

Any ideas as to how i can get the information of these other 3 switches? as we are just about to roll out VoIP phones to them and I need those statistics.

Thanks.

What is recommended either we have to enable specific traps or all the traps of SNMP?

LAG & STP on two 2808 switches

$

I have two PowerConnect 2808 switches.  The switches are in two different buildings and are connected with two wireless bridge connections.  The wireless bridge connections are in parallel (Bridge 1 connects to port 1 on both switches and Bridge 2 connects to port 2 on both switches).  I want to utilize the aggregation feature to send data across both links as well as provide redundancy so that if one of the Bridge connections is cut, the other one carries the traffic.

I have configured my lag to LAG 1 for both ports on both sides.  However, on occasion while traffic is passing over the link, I lose access to the management interfaces on the bridges.  If I remove the LAG, this goes away.  Is this an STP issue (am I creating a loop)?  Should I have STP on the lag?  If so, does that remove the aggregation of data across both connections?  Is there something else that would cause the management interfaces to be reachable while in LAG?

3548 QoS mode trust

Hi,

I am configuring a (powerconnect 3548P) switch for both data and voice, with VLAN1 for data (untagged) and VLAN100 for voice (tagged). Both the PC and IP phone are picking up the right IP addresses, but I am stuck on the configuring of QoS.

I am trying to set the QoS trust as DSCP both from a command line and the GUI but is returns an error of  "Voice VLAN and advanced mode/no qos/trust dscp configuration prevention'.

I know it must be something simple but it's doing my head in as I cannot see what I'm doing wrong.

Any help would be much appreciated.
