Connecting N4032 to Force10 MXL using 40G QSFP+ DA cables

Hi,

I am trying to connect a N4032 switch to a Force10 MXL chassis switch using QSFP+ modules and a 40G DA cable. Now the problem I have is that when I plug the 40G QSFP DA cable in I don't get a link, both switches show that the QSFP+ Optic has been inserted, and that the optic is supported on both switch models.

The MXL is on firmware 9.8.0.0 and the N4032 is on 6.2.1.6.

The show slot command on the N4032 shows the QSFP card:

             Admin   Power   Configured Card
Slot  Status State   State   Model ID                         Pluggable
----- ------ ------- ------- -------------------------------- ---------
1/0   Full   Enable  Enable  Dell Networking N4032            No
1/1   Full   Enable  Enable  Dell QSFP Card                   Yes

The QSFP+ optic is plugged into port Fo1/1/1 on the N4032 and the show interface status command returns following:

Admin   Physical   Physical   Link   Link    LACP    Flow
Intf      Type   Mode    Mode       Status     Status Trap    Mode    Mode
--------- ------ ------- ---------- ---------- ------ ------- ------- -------
Te1/0/1          Enable  Auto       10G Full   Up     Enable  Disable Active

Te1/0/3          Enable  Auto       10G Full   Up     Enable  Disable Active

Te1/0/9          Enable  Auto                      Down   Enable  Disable Inactive

Te1/0/11         Enable  Auto       10G Full   Up     Enable  Disable Active
Te1/0/12         Enable  Auto       10G Full   Up     Enable  Disable Active
Te1/0/13         Enable  Auto                     Down   Enable  Disable Inactive
Te1/0/14         Enable  Auto                     Down   Enable  Disable Inactive

Te1/0/16         Enable  Auto       10G Full   Up     Enable  Disable Active
Te1/0/17         Enable  Auto       10G Full   Up     Enable  Disable Active
Te1/0/18         Enable  Auto                      Down   Enable  Disable Inactive
Te1/0/19         Enable  Auto                      Down   Enable  Disable Inactive
Te1/0/20         Enable  Auto                      Down   Enable  Disable Inactive
Te1/0/21         Enable  Auto       1000 Full  Up     Enable  Disable Active
Te1/0/22         Enable  Auto       1000 Full  Up     Enable  Disable Active
Te1/0/23         Enable  Auto       1000 Full  Up     Enable  Disable Active
Te1/0/24         Enable  Auto                     Down   Enable  Disable Inactive
Fo1/1/1          Enable  Auto                      Down   Enable  Disable Inactive
Fo1/1/2          Enable  40G Full              Down   Enable  Disable Inactive
Te1/1/1          Enable  10G Full              Detach Enable  Disable N/A
Te1/1/2          Enable  10G Full              Detach Enable  Disable N/A
Te1/1/3          Enable  10G Full              Detach Enable  Disable N/A

As you can see the switch does not even pick up the speed of the optic. Now if I take the same cable and plug it between the 2 x N4032 switches - the ports immediately show a link.

The logs from the MXL show the QSFP optic in Fo0/33, it shows the admin state of the ports as up, but the interface state remains down. Now if I take the same DA cable and plug it between the 2 MXL's in the chassis, the interface state changes to up almost immediately. The two MXL's are configured in a VLT, but I have tried to get the link up both with the VLT and without the VLT, does not work either way.

This shows that the DA cables are fully functional, the ports I am plugging into are functional - yet when one end of cable plugged into the N4032 and other end into the Force10 MXL, the link does not come up.

I have the show tech-support output from all 4 switches, if needed.

Thanks

Dave
