Hello everyone.
At the company I work for, I am testing old switches to see which ones are good and which ones are bad. I've already labeled the switch in question as "bad" for these errors - but I've never seen this error before. My coworkers have not either. Therefore, I am asking this community what kind of error this is, what it means, and if it is potentially fixable.
My device is a Dell PowerConnect 3524. It is currently out of warranty.
What I have done: I have deleted the startup configuration and then ran the setup wizard. I set an IP address to it, gateway, and password. The rest I left as the defaults. This configuration works on all switches I have ever tested, including this model, so I feel that this configuration is okay.
I then plug an ethernet cable into any of the ports and the other end into a very small 5 port switch that also has my main computer, telephone, and other items connected to it. They all are getting internet, I do not feel this is a problem.
I plug another ethernet cable into another port on the switch and the other end into a laptop sitting on top of the switch (my testing laptop).
I begin pinging the local firewall and run it with the "-t" parameter so it doesn't stop.
This is fine for about 5-10 minutes usually. I can swap ports and such and it'll pick up pinging soon and do what it is supposed to. After plugging it into a bad port, (7 or 8), I get the error "SW3P_callback_rx_frame - intervention arp - discarded." and no longer can pass traffic. Putty shows that the link is up and forwarding, but pinging is not possible.
I am only an intern, this switch is not of vital importance and will be sent to the "graveyard" and whatever my company does with old switches will be done. I am simply curious as to what this is. Does anyone know what this is and what could be done to resolve the issue?
Thank you for your time!
