Hello,
We experienced a network outage the other day that prevented both our computers and phones from communicating. It seemed at first to be isolated to a single switch but seemed to spread. I was out of the office that day and working with my team via cell phone. It seemed to me that the problem was initially isolated to a single switch but then spread once the wrong switch was rebooted.
To make a long story short what fixed the issue after rebooting the switches was removing a PC from the switch. This was discovered because the reboots did not fix the issue and the techs onsite started removing items from the network one at a time.
I have this "bad" PC in my office now and connected it to a small switch in my office off the company network and did a wireshark capture using my laptop. What I discovered is that it is sending out MAC Pause frames. This website shows exactly what I am seeing: .
source: 00:00:00_00:00:00 destination: Spanning-tree-(for-bridges)_01(01:80:C2:00:00:01) protocol: MAC CTRL length: 60 info: MAC PAUSE: pause_time: 65535 quanta
Is there a way to have the switch automatically shut down the port if this would happen again on our network?
This one bad device halted a lot of work for us that morning. Any insights into how we could prevent something like this in the future?
Thanks,
