Setting up a VLAN on PowerConnect 3548P

Can someone help me to set up a VLAN on a 3548P please? My understanding of VLANs is fairly high-level so I need help with the detail of the configuration as I've never done it before.

This is what I have at the moment.

  • a 3548P which has workstations connected to it. It is connected to a Netgear firewall for access to the internet with a default gateway of 192.168.1.250 - the min address range is 192.169.0.0/22.
  • no VLANs at present apart from the default VLAN1 - all devices are connected to that VLAN
  • the configuration of the switch is basically as it comes out of the box - the only configuration it's had is to set the admin password, give it an IP address for management purposes and to set the default gateway - basically what the setup wizard does

This is what I want to achieve.

  • I need to segregate a couple of computers so they have no access to the rest of the network and the rest of the network has no access to them
  • the segregated computers will still need access to the internet though (as will the other computers)

As I said, my understanding of this stuff is limited but I presume I need to,

  • create a VLAN for the segregated computers
  • assign the ports those computers are connected on to the new VLAN
  • ensure that both the computers still on the default VLAN and the couple on the new VLAN have internet access but no access to each other

Is it possible to create a VLAN just for the segregated computers but leave the others as they are, i.e. on VLAN1, or do I have to create 2 new VLANS, one for the segregated computers and another for the remainder (and them move them off VLAN1)?

I'm also confused by the difference between trunk and general ports and when to use them.

I'm sure this is a very simple setup for someone who knows what they are doing! Can anyone help to plug the gaps in my knowledge please?
