I am a lone sysadmin with limited networking knowledge, however I'm learning quite a bit these days. One new thing I've been trying to learn about is LLDP because we are getting a new VoIP system installed by third-party vendor. We are setting up a new VLAN for it and the phones will use LLDP to figure out that they belong to the voice VLAN. If my understanding is correct we will basically be setting every port on our Dell powerconnect switches to trunk mode so that no matter what device is plugged in, be it computers for the data VLAN or phones for the voice VLAN, the device will end up on the correct VLAN.
So I set out to learn about LLDP by looking at the Wikipedia page and looking up some videos on YouTube, however I feel like the concept hasn't really been that clear to me besides what I've read at face value. I guess I'm just trying to understand in a simple way how this protocol works and would allow a phone to end up on the correct VLAN.
If anyone can help me understand this a bit better I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
