In the N-3XXXP

can :?

  1.       Port Mirroring of all ports to a single destination port – for call recording (I know this can be done onthe PCT 70XX)
  2.        Mirroring Support for entire VLAN (alternative to 8).

do we have some paper of detailed spec and design?

PC8132 iSCSI setup

Stack of 2 for dedicated/isolated iSCSI data traffic. Would it make sense to enable or disable iSCSI optimization?

If disabled would the normal config be enough:

spanning-tree mode rstp
flowcontrol on
spanning-tree portfast
storm control disabled for Unicast, enabled for Broadcast & Multicast
jumbo frames 9126

I am not planning to have any (as I do not have any) Equallogic connected to it.

Does the N4000 line support BGP?

We are looking at the N4000 (N4064) and are wondering if they support BGP?  The spec sheets don't mention it but since they are the replacement of the PowerConnect 8100 series which did support BGP I thought I would ask in case it was an oversight.

lldp-med and 802.1x

Hi,

We currently have a few stacks of 7048Ps as our office switches. We have both IP phones and computers, they each have their own individual ports on the switch (so no phone to PC daisy chaining).

Currently we have all the access ports on the same settings:

1. native vlan is data vlan
2. LLDP-MED assigns voice vlan

When a phone is plugged into the switch LLDP-MED assigns it to the voice vlan and when a PC is plugged in it stays on the data vlan.

We're needing to put in 802.1X in the near future and unfortunately our phones don't support 802.1X so I was wondering how these two (802.1X and LLDP-MED) play together and if there's any interoperability.

I realise I could add all the MAC addresses of the phone into AD and use them as MAB access but that's not a particularly appealing option to me. I was wondering if it's possible to still have LLDP-MED assign the voice vlan and allow traffic for a device that doesn't respond to 802.1X requests? How would I do this?

Can flowcontrol be enabled for a live Powerconnect switch without disrupting connections? I currently have one of my 6248's dedicated to an iSCSI network which is live. Do I need to shut everything down to enable flowcontrol? John

Hi Guys/Gals,

Can someone give me a list of the dell PN/s that work with the above ?  The manueals don't have it, the web site doesnt have it, and well I am totally lost now :/

Does for example the Dell PN: K5GRD work with the above units ? Or what does Avocent wise?

All help greatly appreciated :)

Dell online chat really does need to be avoided :

I have spent 20 mins on the live chat to someone at dell - waste of time.

I then spent another 25 minutes in different queues and going round in circles on telephone numbers given to me by dell online chat :(

Console error when upgrading stacked PowerConnect 3548P switches

I'm upgrading the OS in several switches in one of our buildings.  One pair is a set of stacked 3548P switches running version 2.0.0.47.  Oddly (in case this has any reference) the switches have stack IDs of 1 and 3 (there is no ID 2).

I've backed up the configs, and already uploaded the new image (2.0.0.53) and boot code.  However, when using Dell's following commands as described in their guide:

boot system image-2 switch 1

I get the following response:

"Wrong number of parameters or invalid range, size, or characters entered"

I then did just "boot system-image 2".  This actually allowed the first switch in the stack to change its boot image.  However, I cannot do a "boot system image-2 switch 3" I get the same error.  I have also tried "boot system image-2 all".  Same error.

I'm not going to reboot the switches until I can ensure I'm not going to break something, but I'm not sure what I can do to resolve the issue.  I'm following the documentation to the letter as far as I can tell.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Stacking and trunking

$

Hello,

I have a question regarding trunking in combination with stacked switches. In my example I have two switches that are stacked, and an unstacked switch. I've placed all sales employees in VLAN 10 (first switch in stack) and the management employees in VLAN 20 (second switch in stack)  on the stacked switches. The servers are on VLAN 30 on the unstacked switch.

Do I need to assign trunkports between the two stacked switches in order to enable the stacked switches to communicate?

Thanks in advance!

Verify / troubleshoot RIP configuration on PC6224

I am trying to configure RIP between a PC6224 and our firewall (Watchguard XTM510) to test if we can use RIP for simple, but automatic failover situations. I've configured the 6224 and our firewall with RIP, but no routes are being exchanged. My first thought was that our firewall was misconfigured, Watchguard took a look at the configuration and I was being told that the firewall is not receiving any route / RIP updates. So my next step is to call in some help of Dell support to verify the RIP configuration on the 6224 as well.

show ip rip:

RIP Admin Mode................................. Enable
Split Horizon Mode............................. Simple
Auto Summary Mode.............................. Disable
Host Routes Accept Mode........................ Enable
Global route changes........................... 1
Global queries................................. 0

Default Metric................................. Not configured
Default Route Advertise........................ 0

Show ip rip interface vlan 99

Interface...................................... vlan 99
IP Address..................................... 172.16.99.254
Send version................................... RIP-2
Receive version................................ RIP-2
RIP Admin Mode................................. Enable
Link State..................................... Up
Authentication Type............................ None
Bad Packets Received........................... 0
Bad Routes Received............................ 0
Updates Sent................................... 22091

The firewall is directly connected to the 6224. RIP communication should go via VLAN 99. Direct communication via VLAN99 is possible....

VLAN 99 configuration:

interface vlan 99 routing ip address 172.16.99.254 255.255.255.0 ip rip exit

show ip route rip all is empty.

Is there a way to troubleshoot RIP communication further? I my opinion, this configuration should work...

PGM Support on PowerConnect 6200 Series Switches

$

We are utilizing Dell Kace K2000 appliances for our PC imaging.  We are trying to deploy an image to multiple PCs at once using Multicast.  The K2000 appliance uses the Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) protocol for Multicast traffic (http://www.itninja.com/question/k2000-multicasting-only-works-with-pgm-pragmatic-general-multicast#answer-90565).  We are using Dell PowerConnect 6248 switches and cannot find support for PGM.  I can find support for IGMP Snooping and PIM-DM, but nothing on PGM.  Does the PowerConnect 6200 series switches support PGM?  If not, is Dell aware of this interoperability issue between their Kace appliances and their PowerConnect switches?

S4810 multicast groups

The specs on the S4810 switch says the multicast table size is 4000 entries. What exactly does that mean? 4000 multicast routes? 4000 multicast groups? 4000 total routes+groups?

I'm interested in the max number of multicast groups but can't seem to find that info

thanks

Desperately need PowerConnect 3024 6.1.5 firmware!

Hey there, the latest publically available firmware for these switches is 6.1.2, which has a serious hang problem, that I'm running into on both of my 3024's. You had a new beta release, 6.1.5, that remedied this. The only way to get it is to contact the dell forum/mods. So I am desperately requesting someone send me this firmware! Thank you so much!  I'm about to throw these switches in the trash due to frustration, but v6.1.5 totally fixes this random hang issue so I'd love to go that route instead!

If you have it please email me at <ADMIN NOTE: Email id removed per privacy policy> Thanks!
