Unexplained packets discarded

The last two weeks we had about 3 times 30 seconds of downtime caused by out switches. The problem is that a lot of packets are being discared. These packets are received on our core switch. We have configured two 6224's in a stack connected to multiple 3500's. They are connected via two cables and configured as port channel on both sides.

The regular port channel does not show any errors:

A soon as we lost connection I rapidly connected to the switch and did a show process cpu command to see what what going on. The cpu utilisation is higher than normale but not unacceptable high. Normally it's below 10% and now the 1 min timer raised to 32%. 18% was caused by the ipMapForwardingTask, which might indicate a buffer issue?

Any troubleshoot tips? Vlans are the same. The stranged thing is that only unit2 is discarding packets. Vlans are configured the same so that doens't explain the discards. We also notice a connection loss for a short time so that's not the issue.

Issues with N3048P Voice connectivity

Good afternoon, I currently have 2 (stacked) 3048P a 4064p and a bunch of Cisco switches (also stacked) I cannot get voice working on the Dell 3048p switches.

Seems like a fairly low level error at the Dell 3048p end, I can ping each stack of switches in turn and the gateway router. All on the voice VLAN IP address range. However I cannot ping any hosts connected on the 3048p. If I set the port to any other VLAN except the voice VLAN it works fine.

But for Voice it doesn’t work, I have tried ACCESS, GENERAL and TRUNK modes and have assigned a static IP address to the host and tried 2 different models of phone. For all intents and purposes traffic just doesn’t get passed to the host.

Has anyone else had this issue before?

4 stacked 3548P - all console ports inactive, and web gui stopped responding

Hi, I was contacted by a company who had lost their entire skillset when an employee left, and powerconnects are not my strongpoint.

THey have 4 stacked 3548P's - console ports are  inactive, and web gui stopped responding. we need to do some config, and I don't understand how to "restart/reset" the network, to get the web gui back. I suspect that a reboot would kick it all back to life, but this is their entire LAN I am juggling with.

How do you reboot a stacked network? is it safe?

Could the loss of web GUI response be attributable to anything else?

All other traffic on the LAN is working correctly.

IPv6 Filtering Best Practices

$

I have a network that is using all Dell Power Connect switches.  Beginning in late December, I began noticing a large amount of IPv6 traffic being generated from what I can tell Dell desktops within my network.  While using Wireshark, I notice tons of "Multicast Listener Report" which is saturating the network.  We believe this is being caused by NIC drivers that need to be updates.

Regardless of the driver update, I'm attempting to figure out a way to lessen the affect of these broadcast across the network.  I would like to find a way to filter out or block the IPv6 broadcast from affecting all areas of network.

I currently have a PC 7024F as a main core switch.  Each building has a PC 6024 and each floor wiring closet are PC 5324.

Note; the effect is not affecting server or desktops since they are rejecting the packets, the items being affected are systems that are appliances.

Any feedback or suggesting would be greatly associated

Noob needs VLAN help

I have two PowerConnect 2816's.  On one, I have a WLAN access point that has an SSID for the default VLAN, and a separate SSID for a guest VLAN.   On the other 2816, I have a router with a physical interface for each VLAN.

I know how to configure a port for a specific VLAN, however I seem to be confused on how to handle configuring the switches to support tagged VLAN's that the WLAN AP requires.

Thanks,

Mike

Re-imagining your lifestyle as an empty-nester

$

0

For *** children, taking the step of moving out of the house, whether it’s to go away to college, get married, or start a career of their own, is a little nerve-racking, but mostly exciting. It’s a new adventure and one most kids take on eagerly as they finally achieve that independence they’ve been craving.

Move-out day has a different meaning for parents, however, especially when the last child moves away. Yes, they’re excited for their children and ready to see them succeed, and yes, it’s nice to finally have the house to themselves, but it’s also a time of mourning and nostalgia for a full house and fun family memories.

Moving on to the next phase

Empty-nesters are also faced with a number of questions about their new lives. If the kids have all moved away, is it time for you to move, too? Should you downsize? If not, what do you do with all the empty rooms? What will you do with your time now that there are no kids at home to care for?

Re-evaluating your lifestyle

First of all you should decide on whether you’ll keep the house at all. Evaluate your health and the layout of your home: will you be able to navigate the house as you age? Are all the necessary rooms (master bedroom, laundry, kitchen, etc) all on the ground floor? How about the entrance to your home—is it split level, split entry? Would it be easy to construct a ramp up to the front door if necessary?
Also consider whether having extra space outweighs the hassle of paying higher heating and cooling bills, time spent cleaning, and yard maintenance. If you’re ready to simplify your life, now is the time to make a change.

Fulfilling your lifelong dreams

You may be a young empty-nester or anticipate many years of good health ahead of you. If so, having an entire house to yourself might seem like a dream come true. Now you can finally turn all those extra bedrooms into the hobby rooms you’ve wanted your whole life. Make a list of possible options, such as craft room, home office, trophy room, guest room, sewing room, man cave, etc. Determine which of these options is most feasible, which ones are within your budget, which ones will get the most use. Then commence planning your renovation.

6200 series specific STP port (& global) settings?

$
0
0

I haven't been able to find in documentation or posts a simple, "if you have this connected to a port, configure it this way" post.

So here goes:

We have several powerconnect 6200's. They are physically connected in a somewhat hierarchical way, with...

...all switches using RSTP

...a "core" 6224 that handles uplinks from the other switches, along with connections to various firewalls/routers, etc.

this "core" is configured with a lowered STP priority so that it remains Root Bridge

Since this is the Root Bridge and mainly has connections to other downstream switches, firewalls and routers...

Q: In the STP Global Settings window, what should theses settings be:

BPDU Flooding (Disable/Enable)

Port Fast BPDU Filter (Disable/Enable)

Loop Guard (Disable/Enable)

BPDU Protection (Disable/Enable)

For it's ports that are connected to downstream 6224's acting as access switches for most users...

Q: in the STP Port Settings window, what should each Switch-Connected port have for

STP Root Guard  (Disable/Enable)

Loop Guard (Disable/Enable)

TCN Guard (Disable/Enable)

Auto Edge (Disable/Enable)

Do any of these settings change for unmanaged L2 switches?

...for those downstream 6224's that are access switches

Q: In their STP Global Settings window, what should theses settings be:

BPDU Flooding (Disable/Enable)

Port Fast BPDU Filter (Disable/Enable)

Loop Guard (Disable/Enable)

BPDU Protection (Disable/Enable)

most of these ports are single-host connections, both servers and end-users

those that are have Port Fast enabled

Q: in the STP Port Settings window, what should each Host-Connected port have for

STP Root Guard  (Disable/Enable)

Loop Guard (Disable/Enable)

TCN Guard (Disable/Enable)

Auto Edge (Disable/Enable)

there are a fair number of downstream unmanaged L2 switchesserving areas where we can't avoid them

Q: in the STP Port Settings window, what should each Switch-Connected port have for

STP Root Guard  (Disable/Enable)

Loop Guard (Disable/Enable)

TCN Guard (Disable/Enable)

Auto Edge (Disable/Enable)

Finally, what should these per-port settings be for the ports that UPLINK to the core/root?

STP Root Guard  (Disable/Enable)

Loop Guard (Disable/Enable)

TCN Guard (Disable/Enable)

Auto Edge (Disable/Enable)

POE issues with N2048P

We recently deployed N2048p switches in our building to replace our aging Cisco 3750G switches and ran into some problems with POE.  We have some devices that work perfectly fine with the Cisco switch but will not power on with the Dell switches.  Most of the devices in question are AAstra 6725IP phones, and about a third of them won't power on at all.  The N2048 shows "test-fail" on the status column with a "show power inline".  We are on the latest firmware 6.2.0.5 and the latest firmware on the phones.  This is also affecting our building access system as it runs off of POE as well.  I've contacted AAstra, but so far they have been little help.  Anyone else had the same experience?

Evaluating Switch Specification tips?

$

0

We are in the midst of spec'ing 2 to 4 CORE switches to be utilized within a virtualized environment.  When reviewing switch specs...what are the most important aspects to look at when comparing?  Is it Switch fabric,  PPS or are there some hidden items people typically overlook when reviewing switches?  We have a working set of Dell 6224's within our network but will be looking at the N4000 series switches for our Core.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Dell 6224 Trunk to Cisco 3750 over ISP Q'in'Q

Having an issue with tunneling VLAN traffic over a service provider q'in'q trunk.  One side I have a Cisco 3750 with dot1q configured and on the other side a Dell 6224 with the uplink port set to general.  Does the Dell switch need additional configuration when connected to a service provider switch that haa q'in'q configured?

I have this setup within the same facility and it works flawlessly, this is the first time using a q'in'q ISP connection.

DIAG LED on a 5324. New to managed switch

$

I just bought my first used managed switch, a PowerConnect 5324.

Software Version     2.0.1.4
Boot Version     1.0.2.02
Hardware Version     00.00.02

Being new to managed switched, I am not sure I can say if there is a problem with it or not.

This is what I noticed.

1. I am using about 16 or so of the 24 available ports.  I noticed that the LNK/ACT LEDs of ALL connected ports are constantly flickering, compared to when I was using a non-managed switch.

2. The DIAG led is off.  According to the manual, it should be on and green in the absence of problems.  As I connected to the 5324 using the serial cable and PuTTY, I noticed that the switch booted successfully without any problems.  Shouldn't the DIAG LED be on then?

Sorry for the "basic" questions.

Renato

ip address of attached machines

I have just joined a company and i am trying to understand the topology.
We are using few powerconect 6248 and 5548. there are hosts, servers and virtual machines attached to them

How can I check the ip addresses and type of the machines attached to them?

I have tried "show lldp neighbor" and "show isdp neighbor" but they are just showing the switches attached not the hosts and servers.
