Host depleting in lan

I have recently joined a company and the complete network in in 192.168.0.0/22, Most of the ip addresses are statically assigned to hosts.
so now they are running out of ip address.

The dhcp range is 192.168.0.15-192.168.0.140 and next ip addresses are assigned to servers so they cannot expand the dhcp range. As a resolution want to move the network to 10.0.0.0 network.


What would be the best approach to increase no of hosts on network. should we change the subnet mask to /20 or move the network to 10.0.0.0 network.

And if I change the subnet to /20 what should be done about the fixed ip address servers and build machines for dhcp range

I see al the ports are configured as access ports on 6248, 5548 have all machines on native vlan with 192.168.0.0/22 subnet.

Intervlan routing is being done by sonicwal

My confusion is all the ports on switch 6248 are access, so how is vlan traffic reaching to sonicwall and back to switch.

I am able to ping from my machine in 192.168.0.0/22 subnet to machine in vlan 60, how is tis happening?

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie in this area and have a demand for separate VLANs in the departments of a company. The problem is that it is not feasible at the moment to identify all cables arriving at the switch and group them in order to associate the vlan to the switchport.

I decided to tag packets by subnet of origin, but they are 5 switches and i needed to do this at all. However, when configuring a computer with one of the address of one of vlan's i do not get any kind of communication. The switches are connected via RJ-45 cable into the ports 23 and 24.

I need the tag on a Sonicwall Appliance, so i have to cascade the vlan tag through the swiches.

What should I do to make this work?

It is possible in this way?

Is there another way without having to identify all cables and associate vlan's to switch ports?

It is possible to cascade the vlan tag through the cascade ports?

Here is my setup.

I have a 5224 in the basement, connected to an IPCop firewall/ISP and managing all the ports on the main floor of my house.

I have also installed a 5324 on the second floor (connected to the 5224) to manage the ports on the second floor.

I started reading more about the Spanning Tree.....

Currently this is how the 2 switches are configured (default values)

Non-responsive Management after VLAN change

I was trying to configure a voice vlan on my 2848 switch stack.  I used the web interface and Voice VLAN section.  Once I hit apply, the stack stopped responding.  I can still connect to the IP of the other two switches but not the master.  How can I reverse this?  The configuration only had the default VLAN but I have it set to jumbo packets, etc. and would like to not lose the configuration if I can avoid it.

Then there is a default route to firewall ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.77
All the hosts in the environment have firewall as the default  gateway.

All the switches Data6, data5, data4, data3, data2, data1 are on native vlan's with 192.168.0.0/22 subnet.

Now The issue is that the network is really slow and they want to seggregate servers on a different vlan which are now present o 192 ip address range.

Also they want to migrate it to 10.0.0.0 network to increase number of hosts for future. is it really necessary?

Now my issue is can i seggregate the network without reassigning ip's to all the hosts on the network?

And what can be the reason for network slowness?

And if i need to reassign ip to all the host and servers will i have to change all nat policies and access lists, there are currently 330 access lists and 250 nat poicies.

M1000e networking question

We have ordered an M1000e chassis. We are using (2) Dell Force10 MXL blade switches for networking. My question is that the MXL switch comes with 2 QSPF+ ports. We also ordered (1) of these (SFP+ 10GbE Module, 4 port, Hot Swappable, 4x SFP+ ports (optics or direct attach cables required) (331-8187)) . WE only got 1 but we want redundancy. My question is can I use a QSFP+ breakout cable which has a 40GB connection on the MXL switch end and use 1 or 2 of the 10GB SFP+ cables on the other end into my Cisco switch? WE do not have enough 10Gbps ports at the moment to use all 4. I'm not sure if we need to use all 4 10GBps cables or can use 1 or 2 and grow into all 4? We are thinking of just returning the 331-8187 and using the breakout cable.


PC 8164 VLAN configuration reload incomplete if a port turns UP

Hi,

we've got 2 POWERCONNECT 8164 in stack with a firmware version  "6.1.2.4"

Ports are configured like so:

spanning-tree portfast
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk allowed vlan 2,4-5,7-1000,1024

Those ports are connected to many esxi 5.1 servers, the trunks manage internet and iscsi traffic.

When a physical port goes down and up again (example server reboot) some VLANS stop working.

We found that copying the vlan allowed configuration from its running-config "switchport trunk allowed vlan 2,4-5,7-1000,1024" and pasting it again in the interface all the VLANS start working again.

When we call a "show running-config" the output is always corrected, but it seems to be different from the real running configuration.

We found this issue on more ports for both the switches.

It could be a firmware issue or an hardware one? Could the last firmware solve the problem?

can i use both optical and fiber sfp modules ?

Hi,

I have 2 stacked PowerConnect 3548P switches. The upper switch has got 1 MM fiber uplink (G1) to another switch in a different building. So the upper switch has 1 free uplink port and the lower switch 2 free uplink ports. We recently purchased 2 Poweredge R620 servers and I would like to connect them to Gigabit ports. The "normal" switch ports only allow 100Mbps, so I am considering to buy 2 SFP 1000Base-T modules (for copper) to connect them.

Is this feasible ? Can I use G2 on the upper switch also for 1 1000Base-T SFP ? Is this allowed ?

MLAG and Routing

I currently have one N4000 10GB switch as a core switch and it is doing routing between multiple VLANS.  I want to add another N4000 switch and make it HA using MLAG or whatever the appropriate technology would be.   Looking for a little guidance on how I should configure this setup.  Does MLAG support routing and allows the switches to have a single IP address?

Connecting Dell 8024F to Cisco Nexus 7000

Hello All,

   I am new to networking, so some parts of this question may be naive or stupid. My apologies in advance.

  I am trying to connect my Dell 8024F 10G switch to a Cisco 7000 Nexus switch over fibre. I cannot seem to get any link working. The port led on the Dell was on and was recogonised on the Dell, but enabling the corresponding port on the Cisco disables the port on the Dell in that the led is off and the status says "link down".

Here are the specs:

The SFP+ tranceiver on the Dell end is JD093B-CDW

The fibre is Triplite (dupllex multimode 62.5/125 fibre patch cable)

 

Finally on the cisco end, the tranceiver is a Cisco X2-10GB-LRM

I created a new vlan, and assigned an ip to that VLAN. However the link is shown inactive (it was active briefly for a moment) and I cannot ping that IP .

I would be thankful for any help.

default Configuration on 5548 Power connect

I am new to the dell switches and have recently joined a company. There are two ip addresses configured on 5548 power conect.

ip address 192.168.0.5 255.255.252.0
ip address 192.168.137.17 255.255.255.0

and default gateway is mentioned as

ip default-gateway 192.168.137.1

However we are not using 192.168.137.x subnet, are these ip addresses some default config already present on switches

PC 3548 will not change to standalone

I recently bought several PowerConnect 3548s from eBay. One will not change from a slave to a standalone by breaking into the powerup process and changing to standalone through the Stack menu item. I do not have the whole stack to recreate and change it through the master. All I can get to is the debug/help prompt. Can this switch be recovered?

Low Bandwidth

We have a Sonicwall 3500 as an edge device.

The ingress bandwidth on Wan interface x1 is 33Mbps and egress is 4 mbps

The ingress bandwidth on Lan interface x0 is 5 Mbps and egress is 26 mbps

We have a 100 Mbps connection from ISP.

Does it seems like an ISP issue or something with firewall or LAN?

The users are getting only 1.5 mbps speed, how can I troubleshoot this issue.


16-24 port switch for VLAN Trunking + Layer-3

Hi, I have a mess of a home lab situation that I would like to clean up ASAP. Because this is a home lab, a fanless/quiet switch is a requirement which I believe eliminates all switches higher than 16-ports. That is OK, 24-ports would be ideal but I can make 16-ports work. Worst case I will buy two 16-port switches or perhaps a 16-port and an 8-port, if available. 

I am currently going from the router/firewall to several PowerConnect 2716 switches and because the 27xx series does not support VLAN trunking I need SEVERAL 2716's. I have nine (9) LAN/VLANs going to an ESXi environment which I would like to consolidate down to one VLAN trunk going to each ESXi host through Link Aggregation. 

For each need, what is the entry level or base switch I could use? Meaning, if I want a 16-port, gigabit Layer 2 switch that supports VLAN trunking, what is the lowest model I can use? Likewise, if I want a 16-port, gigabit, Layer 3 switch that supports VLAN trunking (I assume all Layer 3 switches would support VLAN trunking), what is the lowest model that meets these requirements? 

I have seen mixed reviews/information on the 28xx series switches supporting VLAN trunking. I've also read that the 34xx series switches are the oldest/first models which support VLAN trunking???? I would greatly appreciate someone letting me know both specifically about proper VLAN Trunking support as well as handling Layer 3.

PowerConnect N3048 enable password issues

Hi,

Tried updating to latest firmware for my N3048 (6.2.0.5a05) and was flooded with BPDU warnings, had switch connectivity issues (75% packet loss) and was unable to set the enable password.

Issuing the commands:

sw15> enable 

sw15# config  

sw15(config)# enable password password

Gives me this error: Incomplete command or missing argument.

I'm pretty sure that spanning tree was trying to play king of the mountain with other switches in my network, and thus the BPDU issues and connectivity loss, this however; shouldn't have affected the enable password, which when flashing the new firmware stated that was one of the options that was incompatible (uh... what? -- this is the right firmware) 

I've since reverted back to the initial firmware: 6.1.0.6a02, and am still unable to set an enable password.

Anyone else see this issue? or can help?

4 Switchports Not Passing Unicast

Recently started experiencing a weird issue with my Powerconnect 2848. Four switchports just stopped working.

When a cable is plugged in, the external LEDs appear to function normally. The MAC address table is appropriately updated if I move the cable between the four ports in question.


The web interface and 'show tech-support' seem to indicate that everything is running fine. When I reset the port counters, I can see activity for multicast and broadcast, both in and out, but none for unicast.


They're all in VLAN1, there is no port security set up. They're all force-authorized. No mirroring or port aggregation is set up. No config changes were made before this issue occurred.


I initially suspected a hardware error, but everything about the ports appear to be normal except for my inability to reach the connected host.

Anyone have any thoughts/ideas?

Test-Fail Status on N2000 series switch

Hello,

I have had these switches in place for several months now.  We have VOIP phones that the switches provide power to and today there were reports of phones with no power.  After troubleshooting the problem, it looks like most of the ports do not provide power.   Here is the output of show power inline.  Noticed total power is 0 watts and the status on all of the switch ports are Test-Fail. I only copied the first 11 ports but all 48 are all the same.  I have verified that some of these ports do provide power but majority do not.  Any suggestions?
