Port-Channel/Redundant links

$

Hi all,

Our company is in the middle of standing up a SAN between two colocation facilties.  The two facilities will be connected via two layer 2 private leased lines, each side with a two member Dell N4064F stack.  The idea is/was to have the two private long hauls bundled into an LACP port-channel for redundancy.

What we ultimately would like is to have one leased line working at full capacity, and the other being completely unused unless necessary.  We are hoping we can get the secondary leased line as a burstable circuit that is only used when the original line is maxed out.  I do not believe an LACP bundle will bleed traffic over to another port-channel member when necessary.  Does anyone know of another way I could make something like this happen?  Remember the connections between facilities/switch stacks are just Layer2, cannot do any Layer 3 routing in between.

thank you!

PC6248p - How to protect core switch's IP address? DAI?

$

Hi,

I recently had a situation where we had an apparent network outage which manifested itself as all external links went down which implicated the core switch, which also performs all required routing.

An inspection of the logs showed that the switch was complaining of a duplicate IP address (a duplicate of its own!). This was traced  to a contractor's laptop, and after enquiries the owner admitted that they had tried to manually tried to set their IP configuration. From this we could see that they must have entered the gateway address as the laptops address. Needless to say they received a stiff telling off.

I would like to avoid this in the future and wondered if anyone could suggest a way of protecting the IP address of the switch.  Is DAI the way forward?

Thanks

Connecting Multiple 6248's

Good morning all!

I currently have 2x PC6248's that are stacked with YY741 stacking module and 2x Dell F4XF-F4XF 1 meter cables between them and it's all working fine.  # show stack-port indicates that xg1 and xg2 are in use on both switches while xg3 and xg4 are both down.  This is what I'd expect.

I need to add two more switches but they are going to be at quite a distance away.  The first would be approximately 15 meters away and the second would be somewhere between 75 and 100 meters away.  Can I use F4XF-F4XF cables that long to 'stack' the switches and if so, where can I find cables of that length?  If I can do this, can I get away with just 1 cable to the remote switches?  (Yes, I know it would only be a 12GB inter-connect).

If the above answer is no, then can I put 2x gbic's in the xg3/xg4 ports on both the existing switches and and 4x gbic's in xg1-xg4 on the new switches and connect cross-connect the two new switches over LC-LC fiber going that length?  (Yes, I know xg1/xg2 are not usable in the existing stack).  If I can do it this way, what gbic's would I want to get?  Can I use any LC-LC gbic or are there specific gbic's I should use?  And, how would I configure all the switches?  I do have multiple vlan's in the existing stack.  My config is attached below (if you see any errors, feel free to say so lol), it's pretty basic.  All the ports in chassis #1 are in use with a few on chassis #2.  Currently, with only the 2 switches in the stack, everything is working perfectly.

Confusing Config and Routing

I have a L3 switch (PC6224) that I am using for a proof of concept configuration. My native/default VLAN is 192.168.12.0/24. I also have available 10.1.100.0/24(VoIP devices), 192.168.13.0/24(computers), and 192.168.100.0/24 (computers).

When I plug into say Port #6, I am able to get a DHCP address from the firewall (192.168.12.1). I can also get to the internet with no issues. However, if I manually configure an IP address on my computer with ANY of the other subnets(and having either 192.168.12.1 or the VLAN's IP address as the DG), I cannot get to the 192.168.12.1 router.

Any thoughts? This cant be brain ***.

Connecting Dell M630 10G LOM with Cisco 2960X-24TS-L (10G SFP+ to 1G SFP)

Dear All,

Hope you are doing fine. I have a Blade Chassis with 10G Pass through in Fabric A1/A2, 2 Blade servers which are running on Oracle Linux 7.2; and an external switch pair Cisco 2960X-24TS-L with 4 SFP Uplinks. I am trying to connect the Servers with my LAN which are connected to the Cisco Switches.

I have direct attached cables of 10G SFP+ from CISCO for connecting between them. I can connect the blade servers between them; i can connect both switches uplinks ports, but not the blade with Switches.

I have configured the cisco switches for non supported/ unknown transceivers/ GBIC byt below commands:

Global:

#service unsupported-transceiver
#no errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid

Port Specific:

#speed nonegotiate

But, still cannot configure the Blade LOM ports to make the speed 1G so that they can connect.

Anyone have any idea for the scenario? Mainly where can I configure the LOM ports, from chassis/ from Server iDRAC/ Server OS/ Pass-through IP Module  or somewhere else?

Point to point fiber between powerconnect switches

$

Hi,

We've had a fibre line installed at one of our client offices to join a satellite office to the main office. The fibre line runs between two presentation panels and then into a fibre transceiver plugged into a powerconnect switch at each end.

We've been scratching our heads about this since it doesn't seem to work properly. We get connectivity but it's finicky and network access at the satellite office is sketchy at best.

I think the problem is that the switches at either end are two different series - one is a PowerConnect N2048 (main office) and the other is a PowerConnect 5524 (satellite office). Both fibre ports are configured to use default settings (auto-negotiate). the transceivers installed are both Dell-branded 1GBPS modules. Can anyone advise if the issue could be the differing models of switches?

We've got a similar setup at another office using two 2700 series switches and have no problems, this is why I think it might be the differing models of switch.

N4032 login authentication using RADIUS (Windows Server 2008R2)

I'm having trouble getting authentication working.  All of our Cisco switches are working and these are our first Dell switches.

The OOB port on the Dell switches are connected to a management network switch.  That traffic is routed to our main site where we have a Windows server with the Network Protection Service role.  After setting everything up I try to open an SSH session using putty.  I get an Access Denied error.  One the NPS server I see an audit failure saying wrong username or password.  Any suggestions?

I'm using the same policy that the Cisco switches are using.

Dell Force10 S4810 VLAN Mirroring

Dear colleagues,

I was wondering if you have experience with port-mirroring over VLT in Dell Force10 switches and if it is possible.
I've been searching for information in the past week and couldn't find any valuable feedback.
I have a VLT configuration of two switches in VLT.
I have a couple of servers connected with LACP port-channels and assigned dozens of VLANs to them.
Is it possible in VLT configuration to have mirroring of one VLAN to another VLAN ?
Best regards,
Kaloyan S.

Set vlan priority when voice vlan is enabled.

I have a core 6224 connecting a group of 5524 switches. We have Voice Vlan enabled for our ShoreTel VoIP system. My understanding when Voice Vlanins enabled that all voice traffic has priority over every any other vlan.

I would like to set the priority for all my Vlan to use the following order.

  1. Phone Vlan
  2. Desktop Vlan
  3. Wireless SSID #1
  4. Wireless SSID #2
  5. Wireless SSID  #3
  6. Wireless SSID #4

Can I set the priority on the 62224 switch or would I have to set in on the 5524s as well?

Discards Issue

I have a N3048 STACK . I have an environment that has this stack behind a firewall. The issue is  I have a station on this switch which has no routing enabled just an address on the switch for management. lets say the pc is on a 12.10.10 234   and the switch is . 5  . it is trying to talk to a device on a 100.1.1.net  .  The pc on the 12 . is natted to a 100.1 address.  If you ping from the 12.10  to a 100.1.  device you get request timed out . But if you hook up the sniffer it shows a clean request and reply all the way to the uplink port I have mirrored. Now I have  noticed that the received discards  counter goes up with every ping. how do I see why these packets are being discarded? on the switch. The wireshark cap is in front of the issue . It makes it to the switch and then disappears and never makes it to the PC .

How to connect two Force10 S4810P network switches

$

Hi everyone,

We have just bought two Force10 S4810P network switches and we want to install them on two adjacent racks. They will be used to interconnect compute and NAS storage installed across both racks so mainly serving local connections.

We are planning to use the QSFP+ ports to connect both switches and I have two questions.

1. Hardware configuration: what are the best transceivers and cables to use in this case?

2. Software configuration: should we use stacking or virtual link trunking? the information I have been reading so far does not give me a definite answer.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

VLAN not connecting to Internet - PowerConnect 6248

I have the following VLAN's:

VLAN1 192.168.10.1

VLAN50 192.168.50.1

VLAN100 (management)

I'm able to ping from VLAN1 to 50 and from 50 to 1. VLAN1 uses 192.168.10.2 to go out to the internet. I can ping 192.168.10.1 from VLAN50 but when I try to ping the firewall on 192.168.10.2 from VLAN50 I get no response and none of the hosts on VLAN50 are able to access the internet.

What am I missing?

Dell FX2 FN 410S IO Aggregator mgmt issue when vlan 1 is allowed on trunk port

$

New to the FN 410S IOA but I've noticed that I set a management IP on IOA A1 if 10.1.0.103 and A2 to 10.1.0.104.  I connect a fiber optic cable from an SFP on port 9 from A1 to a 10gbps port on Cisco 3750x2 sfp.  Link comes up at 10gig full, great.  I need to pass a few VLANs to uplink this chassis to our network, so the Cisco config is like this:

interface TenGigabitEthernet9/1/1
description Dell FX2 IOA 10GbE A1 Port 9
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,5,10,20,21,172
switchport mode trunk
ip access-group acl1 in
mls qos trust dscp
end

I want my VM's hosted within the FX2 chassis to have access to these vlans:

1 - servers, 5 - wireless, 10 - san, 20 dmz, 21 dmz2, 172 voice.

However once this is setup I can no longer manage the IOA management IP on 10.1.0.103.  Ping times out.  The Cisco switch logs seems to indicate mac flapping between Te9/1/1 (the IOA) and Gi1/0/11 (The CMC Management port).  However if I remove vlan 1 from this switchport and instead use this line on the Cisco side:

switchport trunk allowed vlan 5,10,20,21,172

I can then manage the IOA IP address at 10.1.0.103 again.  However this means any VM's I start to provision (or server blades) won't pass traffic through to VLAN 1 which is our server / pc lan.

Is there an alternate configuration for this?
