Hey guys,

I'm planning a maintenance for this weekend to bring some old powerconnects (5324's) up to snuff. Are there any known issues or recommendations when performing an upgrade from this old of a revision in code (bt1.0.0.21 /sw1.0.0.47)? I look forward to your replies, thanks!

N2048 Stacking Slows down network

We have recently stacked 3 switches using the provided stacking cables and come to realize that our backups are taking double the time to complete when connected to the stack as opposed to a standalone switch both are in the same subnet and not crossing any firewalls... basically going sideways

ideas????

I thought stacking was to improve performance not hinder it

we also notice that thestack is one of our top talkers on that subnet

Hello

I need to connect two 5548P switches with fiber since they are quite far apart. In terms of hardware, what is required? Also, what is the type of fibre required for a connection like this?

Thanks

PowerConnect 5548P Fatal Error - SNMP-F-BADTDOMAIN

I have a stacked switch with 6 5548P units and I monitor their status and basic info via SNMP using Spiceworks and PRTG.  Yesterday we had a weird outage where all ports on unit 4 went down (HDMI and StackID indicator remained up) affecting traffic and POE devices attached to this unit.

After rebooting unit 4, things went back to normal. Then, checking the system logs, I found the following message. Has anyone seen this error before?

%STCK SYSL-A-UNITMSG: UNIT ID 1,Msg:%SNMP-F-BADTDOMAIN: Invalid or unsupported TDomain was given - function SNMPNotifyG_TDomainAndTAddress2UdpAddress 2 ***** FATAL ERROR *****  Reporting Task: CNLD. Currently have Dell R720 servers connected to N4032F with Dell twinax cables and

Dell EqualLogic 6210 SAN's connected to N4032F with Dell twinax cables.

Want to connect EMC VNX 5400 ( has SFP+ ports  with Fiber GBIC's )

Can I just remove the GBIC's from the EMC VNX and connect it with Twinax cable or do I need to put GBIC's in N4032F and connect them with Fiber??

Or do I need something else?? EMC asked if Dell stuff does active/active on their ports??

My N3048P front panel Power LED always in status OFF.  When I use locator function, LED Blinking green. The firmware version is 6.1.2.4. After upgrade to 6.2.0.5(I also tried 6.2.72), problem not  solved, but console continuous printing “hpc_poe_pwrdsne.c(6087) 348 %% Unable to program Power Banks 0x0

GVRP not replicating VLAN configuration

$

Hello, I have two PowerConnect 3524 switches that I want to setup VLANs on. I want to have 3 VLANS: 1xOffice; 1xWifi; 1xOther. I want all three to be separate without the ability communicate with each other, but they all need internet access.

I have setup one VLAN for now (on SwitchB) and connected two ports/computers to it. Currently, the rest of the network is still on VLAN1. The two computers on VLAN 2 are seeing all computers on the network and have internet access.

My SwitchA has a very simple setup:

  • fa0/1 = trunk (to the router/firewall)
  • g3 = general (to SwitchB)
  • GVRP enabled on g3 for "state", "dynamic vlan configuration", and "gvrp registration"

My SwitchB is also simple:

  • g4 = general (to SwitchA)
  • e19 = general VLAN 2
  • e22 = general VLAN 2
  • GVRP enabled on g4 for "state", "dynamic vlan configuration", and "gvrp registration"

I have been using the web-interface only.

I was expecting/hoping that the two computers on VLAN2 would see each other and have internet access, but not see the other computers on the network. I was also expecting to see VLAN 2 get created on SwitchA but that is not happening either.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Many thanks.

QSFP+ MTP Breakout Cable to 4 x SFP+ LC compatibility for connecting MXL 10/40 Blade Switch and Cisco Catalyst 4507R+E

Hi,

My customer have several Dell M1000e Blade system with MXL 10/40 Blade switch. They also have a Cisco switch Catalyst 4507R+E (with Module: WS-X4712-SFP+E).

They want to access an iSCSI Compellent storage from the Blade systems by connecting both the MXL blade switch and compellent storage to the Cisco switch using 10Gb SFP+ connection.

By using a Dell QSFP+ MTP breakout cable to 4 x SFP+ LC, where the QSFP+ cable end is connected with the MXL switch and the 4 x SFP+ cable end connected to the Cisco switch. However, they have concerns if such connection is supported for iSCSI and if the breakout cable is compatible with the Cisco switches.

Since the cable is from Dell, i don't see a problem connecting the QSFP+ end to the MXL switch as it come with a QSFP+ transceiver already.

But for the 4 x SFP+ LC breakout end, as I understand it does not come with transceivers and will required to plug into a Cisco brand SFP+ transceiver which in turn plug in to the Cisco switch.

As such, they are not convinced the breakout cable is supported. They would like to know if we have any breakout cable compatibility guide that stated the breakout cable can work with the Cisco  Catalyst 4507R+E switch?

Thanks.

Jeff

Moving to stack switches

Hi All,

* We currently have 3X N2048 switches in out network cabinet.

* They are connected to one another with a regular LAN cable.

* We have VLAN's setup only on one switch while the other two using VLID 1.

What we should do in order to move to a stack configuration? (I have the cables on hand).

Thanks in advance to any helpful reply.

PowerConnect 2724 - how to access managed mode

$

I have a Dell Power Connect 2724 running in our network. Since it has been installed it has not been managed but I would now like to add the ability to manage and configure it remotely...in particular so that I can enable a GigE bundle to our NAS

When I look at the switch I see the MANAGED light is lit but in that case how would I connect to it to manage it ?

I see references to a default address of 192.168.2.1 but that IP does not exist in our home network

All of the addresses on our home network are from the DHCP pool given out by our Virgin Media Router and are in the 192.168.0/24 range so what do I do to access the management port of the DELL please ?

Windows 2012 R2 to Power Connect 2848

I have a simple question. What should I set the LAG to on the Dell (2,3, 2/3) and the Windows 2012 R2 team (static, dynamic, LACP), (address hash)?

Thank you

N2048 management only works on VLAN 1

Hi, in the documentation for the switch it says that you should run management across a different vlan than data. So I configured vlan 200 like this:

vlan 200

int vlan 200

ip address 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0

ip default-gateway 192.168.0.1

int gi1/0/48

switchport access vlan 200

I then connected a server (ip 192.168.0.1) to port 48 to test pings and the server can't ping the switch and the switch can't ping the server. So this is weird, I used tcpdump on the server to watch what happens when I ping the server from the switch. (I was hoping to see arp from the switch like "Who has 192.168.0.1) and again nothing at all.

So then I thought maybe VLAN 1 is some special unicorn vlan that was screwing everything up so I deleted the L3/SVI interface like no int vlan 1

This didn't work either, does anyone know what in the actual heck is going on?

N3048P Power Supply LED not lit.

I am new to Dell switches and have a question about the power supply LEDs on the front of the switches.  What do these LEDs actually mean?  I have a switch that has the PS1 LED lit, but PS2 LED is not lit even though both power supplies are installed and have power applied.  I inadvertently unplugged PS1 and that LED went out too, but the switch still continued to run fine.  After plugging PS1 back in, I connected to the switch and ran show system, it said that both PS1 was OK and had been up for several minutes and PS2 had a status of Failure.  The green light on each of the power supplies in the back is lit.  After unplugging PS2 and plugging it back in, the front panel LED was lit and both power supplies have a status of OK.  I am assuming that if power is lost at any point, the LED goes out and doesn't come back on again until there is some sort of reset performed.  Is this normal behavior?  Is there a command I can run to reset those LEDs if this happens again?

Thanks,

JD

LAG with QNAP

$

I would like to enable LAG on the 2 ports I have between my Power Connect 2724 and my QNAP NAS

I have a number of options for LAG on the QNAP and would like advice on the best to use with the PC. I am looking for simple load sharing of traffic across the links.

On the QNAP the options are listed here:

The port trunking options available on the NAS:

Field

Description

Switch Required

Balance-rr (Round-Robin)

Round-Robin mode is good for general purpose load balancing between two Ethernet interfaces. This mode transmits packets in sequential order from the first available slave through the last. Balance-rr provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

Supports static trunking. Make sure static trunking is enabled on the switch.

Active Backup

Active Backup uses only one Ethernet interface. It switches to the second Ethernet interface if the first Ethernet interface does not work properly. Only one interface in the bond is active. The bond's MAC address is only visible externally on one port (network adapter) to avoid confusing the switch. Active Backup mode provides fault tolerance.

General switches

Balance XOR

Balance XOR balances traffic by splitting up outgoing packets between the Ethernet interfaces, using the same one for each specific destination when possible. It transmits based on the selected transmit hash policy. The default policy is a simple slave count operating on Layer 2 where the source MAC address is coupled with destination MAC address. Alternate transmit policies may be selected via the xmit_hash_policy option. Balance XOR mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

Supports static trunking. Make sure static trunking is enabled on the switch.

Broadcast

Broadcast sends traffic on both network interfaces. This mode provides fault tolerance.

Supports static trunking. Make sure static trunking is enabled on the switch.

IEEE 802.3ad (Dynamic Link Aggregation)

Dynamic Link Aggregation uses a complex algorithm to aggregate adapters by speed and duplex settings. It utilizes all slaves in the active aggregator according to the 802.3ad specification. Dynamic Link Aggregation mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance but requires a switch that supports IEEE 802.3ad with LACP mode properly configured.

Supports 802.3ad LACP

Balance-tlb (Adaptive Transmit Load Balancing)

Balance-tlb uses channel bonding that does not require any special switch. The outgoing traffic is distributed according to the current load on each Ethernet interface (computed relative to the speed). Incoming traffic is received by the current Ethernet interface. If the receiving Ethernet interface fails, the other slave takes over the MAC address of the failed receiving slave. Balance-tlb mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

General switches

Balance-alb (Adaptive Load Balancing)

Balance-alb is similar to balance-tlb but also attempts to redistribute incoming (receive load balancing) for IPV4 traffic. This setup does not require any special switch support or configuration. The receive load balancing is achieved by ARP negotiation sent by the local system on their way out and overwrites the source hardware address with the unique hardware address of one of the Ethernet interfaces in the bond such that different peers use different hardware address for the server. This mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

Dell N3024 hostname/snmp question

$

Hello,

I've been working with these switches and have a question I'd love some input on.

My inventory mgmt automatically polls our network equipment for tracking purposes, and within the switch configs, we are forced to set the hostname using "_" if we wish to delineate a location within the hostname.  Is there any way to be able to use "." rather than the underscores, as the underscore conflicts with our tracking software making things difficult to find.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi!

Can someone please tell me how I can configure Voice QoS on the Powerconnect 2848 (or if there is any documentations besides the userguide that explains it better)?

I want all ports on the switch to prioritize VOIP.

No other configurations is done on the switch as it is now.

Thanks
