Dell PowerConnect 2816 Complicated VLAN Setup

Hello All,

I am new on the forum but not a total n00b, however,  I seem to be having some issues in understanding how to setup VLAN's....

So, here is what I am trying to do.

VLAN Problem Part 1

I have two 2816 switches, one in the server room and one in a patch room where our internet comes into the office.

I want to have both switches connected with a single 1GB copper link on port 16 on each switch.

Port 1 should be connected to our LAN for access to the GUI via the IP of the device and should be isolated from all the traffic on the other ports.

Ports 2 - 15 should each have their own VLAN, or in other words: -

Port 2 = VLAN 2

Port 3 = VLAN 3

Port 4  =  VLAN 4

and so on till Port 15 = VLAN 15.

So in effect I want to send 14 different network links down a single cable and then split them back into 14 again, kind of a 14-1-14 effect. There will be no issue of bandwidth.

I have read a lot on the topic but have gotten a bit lost on it when it comes to what PVID has to do with this.

So, any help on how to configure this would be greatly appreciated as I have tried so many different way of doing this only to get strange happenings going on and I'm starting to develop a strange twitching in my left eye ;)

The Complicated (and probably mostly pointless )Part

Now, I promised you this is a complicated VLAN setup so lets break this into part 2 and add a 3rd switch just for fun. Lets deal with this as a separate issue to the above if possible

The 3rd 2816 PowerConnect switch is also located in the patch room with the internet connection but before I can continue further down this route I think a little explanation is required.

The point of this exercise (some would rightly call it pointless) is to break up traffic based on external IP address / routers and send it down different VLAN's only for it to be re-constituted into a switch acting like a hub.

So to explain the typology better: -

Cisco Router > In on Port 16 of PC2816 Hub/Switch & leaves on Port 2 > In on Port 2 on Patch Room PC2816 VLAN Switch > Down Single 1GB Copper (Trunk) > Out on Port 2 on Server Room PC2816 > In to WAN port on Netgear UTM25s

This process repeats on every port from 2 - 15.

I think the main problem with this is to do with getting a loop in the network from having the PC2816 switch acting like a hub so I think something would need to be configured on it to stop this from happening.

Why am I doing this you ask?  I like having lots of LED's blinking at the same time in different rooms to provide a visual aid to activity without looking at the WAN port on the Firewall / routers.

So, is anyone man enough to take up this problem...... :)
