Dell 6248 SFP Troubles

Hello:

I am trying to connect my fiber internet connection to the 6248.

When I run show fiber-fiberports optical-transceiver it shows me the details of the SFP.  The SFP is being recognized and It looks like it is seeing good signal, however the port is not coming active.  I have tried hard setting the port and swapping the fiber positions. I want to get this resolved asI am currently using a media converter fiber >cat5.

At the moment the fiber is NOT plugged into the SFP but when it is, input dBm goes to ~5 and LOS goes to NO.

6248 : VLAN routing access control

Hello,

On the 62xx series, web interface page Switching > Network Security > Access Control Lists > IP Access Control Lists > Rule Configuration

it discusses Wild Card Mask

We see in page 304 of the User Manual

"Wild Card Mask — Specifies the source IP address wildcard mask. Wild card masks determines which bits are used and which bits are ignored. A wild card mask of 255.255.255.255 indicates that no bit is important. A wildcard of 0.0.0.0 indicates that all of the bits are important. This field is required when Source IP Address is checked."

Our example:

if we have subnet 192.168.200.0 / 24 and we want to restrict subnet access to remote host 192.168.100.45

We believe the rule would be:

source: 192.168.200.0, wild card: 0.0.0.255  - and - dest: 192.168.100.45, wild card 0.0.0.0

Is this correct or did we mis-understand the manual.

Thank you in advance for your help,

PowerConnect RPS-600 Fan Failure

Good afternoon all -

1 of our RPS-600 redundant power supplies is throwing a RED LED on the fan logo. From the rear of the unit I can clearly see that 1 of the fans is no longer spinning. This RPS-600 is powering just 2 switches

I presume this unit is long out of warranty. I also see this unit is no longer for sale on Dell's website.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we should do about the 1 failed fan? Can the unit run safely w/ 1 fan down?

Are the fans a serviceable/replaceable part? Does Dell sell replacement fans?

FYI: The RPS-600 is located very low in the rack below another RPS-600's (servicing 3 switches) - so I cannot view any stickers/labels on the bottom of the unit.

SNMP V3 setup on PowerConnect 5524

I am trying to enable SNMP v3 for monitoring the switch. I have completed the following commands:

snmp-server engine local default
snmp-server group sgroup v3 auth read rogroup write rwgroup
snmp-server user s3user rwgroup v3 auth md5 *******
snmp-server view sview system included

However when I attempt to connect with the switch it reports that the logon fails due to "BAD CONTEXT" I have tried to use all the group names above however, I can not get past this point. With the commands above what is the Context of the user s3user? or am I missing a command to setup the context.

Thanks

James s.

Hi All I download v9.2.0.2 FTOS to S4820T, the QSFP+ light is green. I changed to v9.3 FTOS to S4820T, the QSFP+ light is amber. Both v9.2.0.2 and v9.3 connection is OK except the light is different. I show interface status, the connection is up and speed is 40000Mbit/s. I wonder whether the QSFP+ LED indicator is Amber on v9.3 FTOS. Thank you.

I have a stack of 7 6248 switches. I have added an 8th to the stack ok but I can get it configured like the rest.

It just says its on Default VLAN 1

I have 3 vlans 1,22 and 201. All ports show in deafault VLAB but only switches 1-7 in VLAN 22 and 201.

How can I copy the config info over to switch 8?

Please see the logs below. What is that saying to me? Is the issue on the network or there is physical issue on the cable/port?

I'm using the following to connect through console:

- USB SERIAL CONVERTER (RS232) Cable

- NULL MODEM ADAPTER KIT RJ45 to DB9F

- Tried CROSSOVER/ ROLLOVER CAbles

The USB Serial converter driver was installed correctly and was connected to COM3 but when I tried connecting using hyperterminal with the suggested settings:

- Select port: COM3

- Data rate = 9600 baud

- data format = 8 bits

- stop bit = 1

- flow control = none

- VT001 emulation mode selected

- function terminal key selected

But not showing anything in the terminal, any help? I really appreciate any inputs on this matter.

Dell 5548. I cannot add a port to the voice vlan.

Port gi1/0/1 is not even in VLAN 281.

I tried putting it in general mode, trunk mode. Adding the 281 tagged, untagged. Removing ALL vlans. Same thing.

Port gi1/0/1 is a static member and cannot be a candidate in a Voice VLAN 281.

5548 Web Gui problems?

$

Hey All! We have used lots of dell switches in the past with minimum problems with the web gui. We recently bought a 5548 and the web gui seems to not work so well. Is there a way to upgrade the "openmanage switch manager" ? Or is that built into the firmware? We have the latest firmware installed and erased the config to factory default. For example: The vlan web page. We can click on the (U,T) ect on our 6248 and change them. On the 5548 it looks like we cant do this from the web gui? Also half the pages take forever to load and don't come up at all sometimes.

Greetings, I would like to script some commands to apply to multiple scripts. e.g. add a user, set the password, disable some select ports, set the NTP server, System contact and save the config Can anyone advise how I can create the scripts? I know the commands I want to run, I just need to know how to create the script with the sequence of the commands I will be using Solarwinds NCM to schedule the execution of the scripts.

Powerconnect 62xx LLDP configuration issues and questions

$

Okay, I'm thinking I might have originally done the LLDP configuration wrong, and I want to figure out what I should/shouldn't be doing.  So let me explain:

I am using a Fluke LinkRunner 2000 to port-map a building.  This lovely device queries either CDP or LLDP to tell you where a wall port (if live) is cabled to on a switch.  However, you have to have LLDP configured on your switches, or you'll get a vague knowledge of a switchport, without knowing what switch.

I have a mix of Dell 35xx, 55xx switches, and a 62xx switch that functions as the gateway.  I configured them all for LLDP, but after I did, a number of ports in one area of the building are tracing back to a gig port on the 62xx being used as an uplink rather than the switchport they should be going to.

Here are the things I did with the 62xx switch (not using exact command names)

  • Named the switch (through the asset section)
  • Selected the entire range of ports (all ports on the switch)
  • Enabled LLDP
  • Enabled LLDP MED
  • Enabled LLDP transmit
  • Enabled LLDP transmit tlv (port-desc sys-name sys-desc)
  • Configured the LLDP management address for all ports

Did I do too much, or add some options beyond what I should have?  The main goal is to be able to easily identify the ports when scanning them through LLDP.  It would also be great if I could query via LLDP which VLANs a port is on, but I didn't see the exact commands for that.

Thanks for your help.

N2048 best setup for Server core switch

Hi,

I want to setup a N2048 with the best possible configuration for a Dell server core solution.
No clients will be connected to this switch, only Dell servers.

We also will have a connection to another Dell switch 2048, i was thinking to create a LAG for this.

Hope that someone can help me with the best setup for this.

Kind regards,

How to configure vlans through fiber jumper

$

Hello,

I have 2 stacks with 3 - 5548's and 1 - 5524P connected with a multi-mode fiber jumper (switches are to different ends of the office over 400 feet). I need to create 2 vlan on both 5524p. These vlan's will be called vlan 1 and vlan 5, and will be used with a Powerconnect W-3200 wireless controller. On the W-3200 I have created both vlans already. Vlan1 will be used for our internal network (T-1 line) , vlan 5 will be used for our outside network, which is connected to a cable modem line. Both vlan1 and vlan5 will not talk with each other (2 separate networks). I have already tested this with one 5524, which I already created both vlans.

The question is how do I setup these 2 stacks to talk with the vlan's? Is there any other configurations I need to get the 2 vlan5's to talk over the fiber?

Thanks

Hello,

Recently I am planning to add IPS as a bridge in between the router and firewall.  However, due to budget limit.  It is not allow to purchase deploy another IPS for cluster or purchase A/B bypass switch.

I have a old switch 28xx switch onhand and I have a idea like my drawing attached.  Did you know is it possible to do so.  What any things I need to take care about this?

Thanks!

Stacking or Link aggregation

Hi,

thanx in advance..

Honestly speaking i am new in Dell switches.

i have a little doubts in it please clear to me.

i have two dell power connect switches which is stacked. i connected with 3 dell power edge R620

from one lan card of server one connected with master switch port no one and the second lan connected with slave switch port no one.

i done nic teaming into the server.

the same did in rest servers.

My question is if the stacking done. so there is need to do link aggregation too.

or after stacking no need to do any other advance configuration into the switch like channel group or port channel??????????
