Dell PowerConnect 6248P - Bay module hot swap?

$

I'd like to avoid having to power down a 6248P out of service to install a SFP+ module (0U691D) in bay #2.  Can I install / remove these modules without powering down the switch?

I have not been able to find an installation guide for the 0U691D, and the documentation for the 6248P warns not to install or remove stacking modules while the switch is powered up, but says nothing about the other modules.

Thank you for your help!

Dell m6220 aggregate to Cisco 6506

I am transitioning my ol' Dell 1955 balde chassis to my "new" Dell m1000e blade chassis at home and I've run into an issue. I'm posting it in networking as it relates more closely to that than the other available categories.

The setup: Dell m1000e with six m6220 standalone switches (not stacked) connecting to a Cisco 6506. Each m6220 spans four Gb blades in the 6506... m6220-a1, port 17, plugs into 6506, port g1/0/1; m6220-a1, port 18, plugs into 6506, port g2/0/1; m6220-a1, port 19, plugs into 6506, port g3/0/1; m6220-a1, port 20, plugs into 6506, port g4/0/1; m6220-a2, port 17, plugs into 6506, port g1/0/48; m6220-a2, port 18, plugs into 6506, port g2/0/48; m6220-a2, port 19, plugs into 6506, port g3/0/48; m6220-a2, port 20, plugs into 6506, port g4/0/48; the process repeats expectedly for the remaining m6220's.

The LAG groups are: po1 (12, 17-20) to po1 (g1/0/1-g4/0/1); po6 (a2, 17-20) to po6 (g1/0/2-g4/0/2)

Everything comes up fine. show ether-channel on the Cisco shows LACP is up and running fine, as does the same command on the Dell side.

I made all the LAG interfaces trunks and initially assumed Dell was like Cisco whereas no defined allowed VLAN's means all VLAN's allowed. I've since read that the default Dell behavior is to only allowed VLAN's specified. I've added the appropriate VLAN's on the Dell side.

Pings between m6220's work fine. Pings between the 6506 and the blade servers do not.

The blade servers are running ESXi 5.5U2 and I've added both A fabric interfaces to the management vSwitch. I first tried making the m6220 g1/0/1 an access port, but that didn't work. I tried making it a trunk port and setting a VLAN, but that didn't work either.

What information is needed to assist with this?

Thanks.

N2048P POE mode with 100BASE-T link

Hello,

I have a technical question about the POE mode used by the switch in the subject, unfortunatly I couldn't find the answer in the documentation I found around the web.

We're developing a POE powered device that will work at 100BASE-T speed, we would like to know if at that speed the power is supplied on the same twisted pair as the data (aka alternative A or phantom power) or on the spare pair (alternative B, for reference if needed: http://www.rhyshaden.com/eth_poe.htm)

Ideally we want the switch to always provide power with alternative A mode so we can use the spare twistetd pair for custom data and avoid more cabling.

Thanks.

Stacking 2x 6224 - Stacking and 10GE CX4 modules & in each switch

So I recently acquired 2 PowerConnect 6224 switches for a new VMware environment being built.  Each switch has a Stacking module and a 10GE CX4 module.  There likely won't be any future PowerConnect switches involved in this environment - these PowerConnect switches will be utilized for VMware/iSCSI communication and LAG'd to a Netgear GS748tp (corporate LAN switch).

I'm trying to figure out the proper/best way to connect the switches together - using either the Stacking module ports or the 10GE CX4 modules or would there be any benefit to using both?  I'm not sure I fully understand the difference between these modules?

Also, when choosing either/or method above, I'm assuming I would need both cables (regardless of method chosen Stacking or CX4)?

Powerconnect N2000 series - Configure Voice and Data VLAN on same interface

$

Hello Experts,

I need to configure a large number of Dell Powerconnect N2048P switches. We have:
Voice VLAN 20
Data VLAN 30

1.) We need to configure voice and data VLANs on the same interface. So, interface fa0/1 will have a VOIP phone connected and accessing VLAN 20, with a computer daisy chained off the IP phone accessing VLAN 30.

Normally I would use something along the lines of:

interface fa0/1
switchport mode access
switchport access vlan 30
switchport voice vlan 20

Is this the same concept on the Powerconnect N series switches? Or would I configure the interface as a trunk with a native VLAN of the Data VLAN maybe?

2.) Also, what would be the commands on this N series switch to declare VLAN 20 as the voice vlan?

3.) Also I am looking to enable QOS on the switches, what would be the proper method for this?

Thanks in advance!

1548P Port Sec question

Hello, we have always been a Cisco shop but are giving Dell switching a try.  We are test driving a 1548P and one thing we can't figure out is how Dell portsec with mac sticky works on the Dells.  Maybe this isn't supported with the 1548?

PowerConnect 3524P Switch + Port Error

I just reconfigured my switch to have the exact settings as one of my other switches (same models).

Everything seemed to work fine, but when i was on the GUI to manage the switch, i noticed something weird. I am missing the e1 port when I pull up the port configuration it starts at e2 and all ports are off by one number all of the way through g4.

Under system, when i see the image of the switch and i click on port 7 for example, it takes me to e8.

Also when i am in system>general>power-over-ethernet, when i loot at the port settings, it starts at e2, but there is also a port "NoName_NotPresentPort"

Anyone have any idea what is going on???

Also i noticed after i load the new configurations, both switches have the same "Sys Object ID", is that an issues and how would i change that?

Thanks.

N3024 configuration of VLAN Routing via GUI?

$

Hi there, I'm busy testing VLAN routing with the N3024 and found that the VLAN routing menu item described in the user manual does seem to exist in the GUI. The firmware has been updated to the latest build at the time of posting (6.2.6.6) and I still don't see it. Is VLAN routing therefore only possible via the CLI?

N3024F brings links down for no reason

Hello everyone,

we have a "star" shaped network where all the peripheral switches are connected to a central N3024F using fiber cable.
Some switches are connected using a 2 port LAG but most of them are using a single cable because the network is still work in progress, others are connected on a single port.

We already experienced a loss of connection to a switch twice (once in august and once in may), to bring back the interface we had to force it down from the N3024F configuration and then bring it back up, so no actions were taken on the peripheral switch but only on the N3024F.

My idea was that the Dynamic LAG with a single cable (the case of the switch we lost) could be a problem and I was planning to configure all the LAGs as static (we shouldn't need the dynamic configuration anyway) but friday night we had a major downtime caused by the same problem occuring on 4 switches at the same time, 2 of them configured with no LAG, the log on the N3024F show this:

NoticeNov 20 21:50:10DOT3ADch10 is down.
NoticeNov 20 21:50:10DOT3ADch9 is down.
NoticeNov 20 21:50:10TRAPMGRLink on Gi1/0/22 is failed
NoticeNov 20 21:50:10TRAPMGRLink Down: Gi1/0/22
InfoNov 20 21:50:10DOT3ADInterface Gi1/0/19 detached from ch10.
NoticeNov 20 21:50:10TRAPMGRLink on Gi1/0/21 is failed
NoticeNov 20 21:50:10TRAPMGRLink Down: Gi1/0/21
InfoNov 20 21:50:10DOT3ADInterface Gi1/0/17 detached from ch9.
NoticeNov 20 21:50:10TRAPMGRLink on Gi1/0/19 is failed
NoticeNov 20 21:50:10TRAPMGRLink Down: Gi1/0/19
NoticeNov 20 21:50:10TRAPMGRLink on Gi1/0/17 is failed
NoticeNov 20 21:50:10TRAPMGRLink Down: Gi1/0/17
InfoNov 18 15:06:04CLI_WEB[WEB:root:192.168.0.1] Disconnected due to Idle Timeout

The solution was the same as before, force down the ports/LAGs and then bring them back up.

So what could cause a problem like this? I know we have an outdated firmware on the switch (6.2.0.5), but could be only that? Should I run some tests on the fibers, the patches and the transceiver? Could be a HW related problem on the backplane itself or to something else like high temps or such things?

Thanks

Port-channel is not an option for RSPAN Destination Reflector Port

$

Hello,

The trunk link between our N3024 and N2048 is a LAG port channel (po1).

While setting the destination type to Remote VLAN, it ask for Destination Reflector Port which I assume has to be the .1Q trunk. Among listed interfaces, Po interfaces are not an option.

Why? How to proceed now?

Thanks!

Powerconnect 5324 and Firefox

I searched a bit for a similar thread that covers this but could not find one so if one exists I apologize to the mods if one does exist

I am having trouble managing Dell 5324 switches using some of the latest versions of Firefox. I am sure I have tried a few of the higher versions, but the main box I would like to conquer this on is running Firefox 42.0

It opens the page and seems to authenticate and then reports I should use IE 5.5 or Netscape 7.1

Management opens fine in IE 9

Since this switch is on the private side and can only be accessed from inside management is set up on http not https so I cant see this could be a certificate issue.

Software is 1.0.0.45
Boot 1.0.0.21

Is there anything simple that can be done or is this switch so outdated that I will never get it to be seen by the latest browser versions?

I see there is an updated Boot, does anyone know if that would fix it or is t a waste of time since the switch seems to be fine otherwise.

Dell compatible SFP+ transceiver

I have almost zero experience with fiber connections. That being said I need to get a 10Gbe transceiver module for our new Dell server. Don't know why it wasn't included when we purchased the server and now they want $1000 to buy one. Are there aftermarket ones that are compatible that don't cost as much or should I just *** it up and spend the money?

Would something like this work?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Connectivity between two Dell 2048 stacks

$

Hi Guys, I'm very new to configuring switches. We have a small office and are just setting up a new data room. We have 4x Dell 2048 POE switches stacked for the VOIP phones and PCs and 2x Dell 2048 switches stacked for our servers. I have 4x 10gb twinax cables to connect the two stacks together as per the below pic:

What is the best way to set up these four connections? I've tried making a LAG of the four ports in each stack and it seemed to be dropping some pings until I turned off STP for the LAG group. I'm a bit worried about having turned off STP though. These are the only switches that will be on the network. Any ideas on what the best config for these would be appreciated. Sorry as I said i'm quite new to this.

Thanks, Dave

part confirmation please

I'm sorry for this noob question, but I tried to search the forum and came up empty.

I have need of two modules so I can start taking advantage of my switch's SFP+ ports for

fibre runs of less than 25m to two different workstations as I'm saturating the 1GbE at this time.

My switch is an N2024. My research has pointed to a modual with the part number 331-5311

model number 470-AAOU (I'm not positive if that is a letter O or a numeral 0 in the model number).

Also, is this the only modules I can purchase for SR in my switch? They are very high priced!

Thanks for your time.

Hello,

I've seen searching the internet for some commands relating to tagging and untagging ports on an S4048 without much luck.  Could someone please confirm how to create and (un)tag the following vlans and assign IP addresses:

Create, Vlan 2 (IP: 172.16.2.1/24) and Vlan 3 (IP: 172.16.3.1/24).

I'd like to tag and untag the following ports:

Tengigabitethernet 1/1 - untagged vlan 2 and tagged vlan 3

Tengigabitethernet 1/2 - tagged vlan 2 and vlan 3

If someone is able to assist me with these commands it would be very helpful!

Thanks.
